Hardware News   Hardware News : Scandoubler/Flicker Fixer Available Now!
posted by amigakit on 9-Jan-2006 19:32:23 (5589 reads)
After a long much-awaited delay, we are pleased to announce the immediate availability of Amiga external Scandoublers/Flickerfixers

The device allows any Classic Amiga to connect to and use a standard PC (SVGA) Monitor.

Screenmodes are either frequency doubled or simply passed through to the monitor. What is more, NTSC and PAL Interlace modes are stabilised - so no more annoying flicker!

individual Computers has been kind enough to take a risk and to make another production run of the Indivision (after many months of dealer's nagging).

amikit, plz, post here all technical detals of this device. becouse i double post from your link:

"This device works by doubling the signal that an Amiga outputs so it may be used on a SVGA monitor. It also fixes the annoying flickering of interlace screenmodes both in NTSC and PAL!

Any 31.5Khz screenmodes such as Muliscan, DBLPAL, Productivity etc are passed through the adapter without problem."

but, if adapter only 'double' the signal we will have 30 over 15. it is VERY PAINFUL for eyes. I have internal scandoubler (micronic scandy) which double signal only too. and of course here is no 'interlace flickering' maybe, but refresh is VERY LOW, and it is just kill eyes.

word flickerfixer mean - device 'fix' the picture. But fix only lace/etc , or fix screen refresh too ?

plz, give me full tech here of this device , thanks.

i had one of theese, it got loose from the connector (no screws to attach properly) and it shortciruited my rgb connector :I

other than that it was a fine product and something the guys here forgot to mention is the speedup when using this adapter.

theese days i have an internal eyetech ff/sd , much better picture and signal but also much more expensive than this one (and not to mention impossible to find anywhere)

why you talk about 'price' ?:) someone already watch 15khz signal by 'just doubling' ? It is UNUSABLE. 2-3 minuts, and head start to pain, eyes just CAN WATCH the refresh (big black lines) like in old monitors over camera.

I had the same SD/FF on an A1200 I owned a few years back and it was fine. I ran it on a 14" CRT monitor and used it for hours. Amigakit have confirmed it does work on certain LCD monitors too.

The price is not bad guys, the last one I had was bought around 1998? And it cost me 100 pounds. Also remember the dudes can only do small runs due to a small market (like why an A1 is 8 times the price of a PC main board).

Lastly, these things used to get hot, I suppose they are OK because I left my machine on for days at a time and it never burned out. I used to like the light show also when playing a gfx demo or a game and the unit would switch on and off as required very fast sometimes, but the picture would still be good!

I am considering one for the A600 and replacing the CM8833MK2 with a TFT but I am not sure yet. I will await the sale of some more of my retro items on ebay and consider my options. I have already had to buy a new internal drive for it this year, I don't want to invest too much more cash into classic Amiga stuff.

Sounds like a fault or some earthing issue. I have never seen that, and they would never be able to sell them to the masses if that were the case.

Aha, now thats what I waiting for: the original price. £100 you say? Well hes done very well manufacturing them in such a small batch and getting the price down that low then.

Those look like Micronik scandoublers to me... If that's the case, they are really excellent. Much better than the ScanDo ones (the ones with a transparent plastic case - I've got both).

I'm using one with my A600 and a 17" monitor. If you dislike 50Hz PAL just use 60Hz NTSC interlaced mode and it will look simply great - no flicker and you get a near-VGA resolution. Plus no slowdown typical of DblPAL/DblNTSC and similar AGA modes.

I've got two so I don't need any more, but for those looking for them -- get them while they're hot

Also I don't think that price is all that bad. I paid something similar in 2001, when the market was flooded with them.

Cool these are available.

some of u guys must be on about the interlace screen modes.
You won't get the flicker with the scan doubler, you can use cool DBLPAL/NTSC modes, and normal PAL/NTSC get scandoubled and flickerfixed.

I have an internal one on my Cgfx 3D board.

@kas1e

get a Picasso4, AFAIK it's the only flickerfixer that allows you to increase the monitor vertical frequenzy, for example using normal PAL on your miggy but getting a 64Khz/100Hz mode.

I have one in my A4000T and it works nicely, it's a pity that I can't use it in my A4000D due to my Mediator (which doesn't have VideoSlot)...

So, for your eyes, 30khz refresh mode is good ? of course it is not just 'black lines', but i mean that you can see refresh !

2crubm
thanks, but will picasso4 works with a1200 ? 64/100 is good :)

kasle: no i cannot see or feel any black lines at all.

as for 30khz , i know how that is but i never used dblpal modes or whatever , i used the hacked driver on aminet , forgot its name now though (its like 6 years since i was on aga only with scandoubler... )

and im not saying anything is good for my eyes but i can certainly say that interlaced modes (flicker) is not good at all =)

edit: also picasso4's scandoubler doesnt work (forward signals) on the 1200's zorro solutions, so that u can just forget.

(but cv64's module does strangely enough)

ps: theese days i have a 23inch eizo monitor with 200hz 1024x768 .. not good for my eyes either really but its sharp as hell ;)

Yes 30khz is absolutely fine with me, you got super-sensitive eyes or something??? My PC displays are always set to vert. 60hz as well - cos I like as big a resolution as my monitors allow and that's usually all they'll manage! And my monitors are usually cheap ones too!

I was really pleased when I read this headline, I've been after a scandoubler or two for ages, but then I saw the price! Hm, £90 + p&p is v disappointing...back to eBay it is then...
