News   News : Ars Technica reviews OS4 and MicroA1
   posted by DrBombcrater on 18-Jan-2005 7:20:20 (10207 reads)
Respected tech site Ars Technica has posted a lengthy and rather positive review of OS4 PR update 1 and the MicroA1-C.

"Will Amiga, Inc. and KMOS succeed where Be, Inc. and so many others have failed? It is perhaps too soon to tell, but the story has been more than interesting thus far."

Saw the review on Ars. Congrats to the Amiga community on the possitive coverage.

I haven't checked in on the Amiga people for a long time, so I followed the link in the Ars discussion and signed up here.

Anyway, my first Amiga was an A500 in '87. Then an A2000HD joined the family. Both were majorly upgraded until '94. I moved in earily '95 and they've been basically shutdown since (also shutting down the H.C.C ][ BBS that ran on the A2000). Both are functional, but haven't been booted for years. Last year, I was close to throwing both away, but just couldn't do it.

I've been out of the scene for so long that I barely recognize any names (and don't expect anyone to remember me), but it still feels good to see the community is still going strong. Hoping to see some old friends to get in touch with again.

@j4ydubs

to AW.net There have been quite a few people from the "old days" having a look recently - the platform's definitely looking a lot more alive than it has in a while (though I say that as someone who missed out on pretty much everything between about 1995 and 2001..).

As you've got an A2000 that you haven't used in a while, I'd definitely open it up and check the battery. They've got an unfortunate habit of leaking, and once battery acid is all over the mobo, there isn't that much you can do to save it. There's lots of info here.

Enjoyed reading this article, think it was fair and well written. Nice to see something on a non-Amiga site too. Great stuff!

P.S. Just been to the post office to collect my uA1

Nice article.

Something I found interesting was reading the comments. About half the comments were positive. It really shows that there is interest out there. I feel if the A1 had the right software suite and the right advertising was done that people would be floored to see a new Amiga. After seeing the comments I can now say that a lower priced more complete system would definitly sell.

Well, I remember I used to frequent Ars's forums for a while.. Used to get roasted for being an Amigan too.

iirc Lord Baldrick actually steered the flames to some sort of resonable debate on more than one occasion and I do remember him saying he was going to check on the Amiga scene a little more deeper.

And I also recall him saying he was going to write a book on it..

Jeremy.. If your reading this.. There are some Amigans here that can furnish you with info to turn your book into a best seller.. I kid you not !!

Anyway.. A great read. And thanks for bringing it to mainstream attention.

This thread was linked in the Ars discussion thread. Just wanted to say that if you guys do see any errors in the article to please email the author (email link just below the title on the 1st page) and let him know. The guys over there are usually pretty good about taking criticism/corrections. :)

The article was nice, not too optimistic, but not pessimistic either

A cool article. Don't worry about any little historical inaccuracies as that's not important anymore. What is important is the reception that OS4 gets.

@thread

Some fantastic quotes from the discussion thread:

Quote:
WOW, can't wait to get this when it is a little more affordable.

Quote:
I think if I had the spare money, I'd be interested in getting one of these as a hobby. It sounds like fun.

Quote:
If this thing matures a bit more, I can se myself spending some dough on this hardware/software combo just to have an amiga running at home again.

Quote:
I sometimes long for the old days, maybe if the prices come down I will buy one just for kicks. It would be nice to try AmigaOS on a more modern HW than a 68020 that used to be in my old 1200.

Quote:
If production of this machine allows the price to drop into the realm where I can afford it, I am so snatching one of these up.

Quote:
I'm definetly getting one. Apart from the lack of a decent webbrowser I don't see myself needing anything else apart from games, which was why I bought a PC back in the days.

Quote:
Sounds fairly interesting. I'd probably get one to check it out if the price weren't so high. I'll keep my eye on the price and development and if either of them seems to be getting good I might just pick one up for myself.

Quote:
Although still a bit pricey, I would jump at this beast, but the following have to change : {stuff}

What can we learn from this? Bearing in mind that the majority of these people haven't been following the Amiga scene, and aren't rabid fans?

I would have liked to see some info. regarding the SDK you get with OS4. Developers should know the development tool chain is the most complete and up to date it has ever been. The documentation is lacking (especially for newbies) but it is still quite good.
