Warp3D has always been and will always be owned by the team behind it, that is now Thomas and me. There used to be Sam Jordan, but he left the Amiga for good quite some time ago. H&P was very supportive of the project, but never owned it.

Ok, it's a bit clearer now. But what will be the standard 3D API, for games (and why not applications). I don't think to many API's will that nice, better to cooperate and make one good universal. To many will just eat some HD space...

Currently, we have MiniGL, our own small OpenGL implementation, and Mesa is being worked on.

Isn't OpenGL a free standard? Why use MESA? And do we need more that one 3D API?

Because Mesa is an open source OpenGL implementation. ( == compatible with OpenGL specification)

Dunno, to be honest. I lost contact with him. He's got a homepage, though.

I don't think he will come back.

I wouldn't be concerned about harddisk space.

However, OpenGL isn't just "there". It needs an interface to the hardware. Warp3D was designed to be usable as an API as well as a driver backend for OpenGL. As such, you can't have one without the other, unless you go for a monolithic OpenGL.library that is specific to a certain graphics card.

Warp3D is pretty much the end of the line. The next API will be different. It will be more in the line of Direct3D, with shader support and a full 3D pipeline. OpenGL will be offered as an "alternate" interface to this.

Why that, you might ask. Well, OpenGL has its merits, but it also has its flaws. For one thing I don't think that OpenGL 2.0 did go far enough, and a number of features are simply missing. Secondly, OpenGL is IP-encumbered. Some of the (essential) extensions are copyrighted by the company that owns it, and they will not allow generic re-implementations of this. You would be essentially limited to EXT or ARB extensions - that is mostly enough, but might not quite be.

Finally, having your own API makes it possible to add features that come up without waiting for ARB to move, which can take quite long. Believe me, we have given thought to that, but always come up with essentially the same solution.

I'm not sure you understand the implications:

Mesa is an open-source OpenGL implementation that just isn't called "OpenGL" because for that you need to pay a fee and pass all conformance tests (although I heard that Mesa *does* pass the tests).

MniGL is a reduced-subset implementation of OpenGL. The reason for this is speed. It was born on the Cyberstorm/Blizzard generation of machines that didn't exactly have CPU time to spare, and in a time where Mesa was at version 3.0 and not exactly fast (this has changed considerably in recent history, but with the speed increase came an explosion in complexity to actually write a driver).

So, OpenGL might be a "free" standard, but you cannot simply "use" it - you have to have an implementation. MiniGL and Mesa are two such implementations. MiniGL has a very special purpose, though, and might be the better choice for a certain class of applications/games. For the general case, nothing beats Mesa. But the problem is, as I hope I could outline, a bit more complex than that.

OpenGL is as you said, a standard. It's a _concept_. Mesa is an implementaion of the OpenGL API.

IMHO, yes. You might as well ask "Do we need more than one OS when we have Windows" ?

OpenGL is a standard made by a comittee. It's taking a long time to move forward because of this. I personally think that it's necessary to offer at least an alternative that can move faster.

Just watched the video it looks good, everything nice and fast.
I'd get an OS4/Amiga if they were cheaper and readily built.

You can buy complete systems. Try on www.soft3.net a good dealer and OS4 developer.

Great vidéo Crisot ! And thanks to all developpers for this great product !

It's nice to see that DMA is working... Well we already knew that, but i really like to know if it will be enabled for Micro-AOne-C ? Last time i heard, someone (i don't remember who exactly) said that there was no way to find out if the board OS4 was running on (which ever it is) have the DMA problem or not. And it was the reason why DMA was disabled for Update2 !
