Test indicates that the Sam 440 EP deliver very good performance. The board beat the G3 800, and in some case the G4, thank to the memory controller and other things. Consider the speed of the serial ata, also. The FPGA could also be used to act as a special purpose coprocessor (I.E jpeg encoder). The 5.1 capable audio is another point to consider.

Great news! Now we just need OS4.0 to run on Sam and that will be even better.

hello,

I wish to show if exist speed tests values with efika, pegasos1-2, aone, micro-aone,...

sure not exist because sam new ???

It's hard to persuade me that sam is same as aone for some points, with 667 mhz.

@Insanity

You're absolutely right, it would probably be good for such tasks.

Only problem is, that there's already hundreds of other (cheaper!) boards available that'll do just the same.

But nice to see some somewhat "Amiga related" hardware released.

It sounds like the price is up around what I paid for my AmigaOne. Then you'll end up having to buy OS4 since there isn't any mention of a bundle. I think a lot of people were expecting way less.

Definitely interesting news, but it's sad to see that it is not being bundled with OS4 (for obvious reasons). Hopefully this will change in time.

Personally though I'd love to see a system with a bit more horsepower under the bonnet (and with OS4!).

I would be interested to know if it is possible to install OS4 using a Sam440 board at it stands at present or would it require an update before this can be done?

Kind regards,

Francis

If anyone gets OS4 running on it, let me know and I'll buy one or two.

I think the price for a full system is not bad at all!

You have to remember that the Psile-tower is of very high quality - the price for the tower alone (in Norway) is over 300 Euros.

To ACube : Congratulations in reaching this stage of development!

@fuskoSCN

300¤??? The lowest price I could find in Sweden was 500¤ excluding VAT.

I agree the total price including this really expensive case is great. But still, as
a computer system it has a lousy power/price ratio. This without OS4 even.

@fairlanefastback

I don't get this.. Why port AROS to a PPC platform? Isn't the point of AROS that
it runs on inexpensive, available and modern hardware i.e. the x86 platform?

IMHO they should concentrate on making it better on x86 instead of making
"almost useless" ports to platforms like these. There are more important areas
where development should be made on AROS.

Well I would buy one when AOS4.0 is available with it. If not, its just an expensive toy..

Samwel,

I could be wrong, but I think there are two reasons. One is, the AROS team doesn't want to put all their eggs in one basket. The other is, they want to strike a balance between what makes sense and what the Amiga community is interested in.

I don't think it's the same people taking time out from x86 to do the PPC ports. But I agree that porting AROS to SAM440 is "almost useless". Who knows though what will happen with SAM in the future. If someone successfully ports AROS to it then that makes it more attractive and useful than SAM without OS4 while at the same time satisfying the bizarre need some have for proprietary or non-x86 hardware.

Are people now buying SAM in droves? You would think they would be, given the intense interest in SAM over the past few months, but so far that doesn't seem to be the case. Since the release of SAM it's become clear that people were interested in it primarily because it was seen as a potential platform for OS4, and very few care about SAM on it's own merits. But AROS is giving it a chance.

OK, I'm a bit confused...

People are saying they won't buy it without OS4...

Is this thing already OS4-COMPATIBLE -- that is, CAN it run OS4? Or is it just not compatible yet? (that is, is OS4 not compatible with it?)

Unfortunately, Amiga OS 4.0 is licensed to ONE platform only ie AmigaONE.

Its not licensed for Pegasus, Genesi, Cyberstorm PPC, Mac, SAM or any other PPC based system. Just the AmigaOne.

So, asking for AOS 4 is a waste of breath. Try Unix and install E-UAE on it instead.

also, to put a final nail in the coffin. The amigaone is unavailable to buy and so is AmigaOS 4.0. I have never seen AmigaOS 4 available to buy from anywhere, not Hyperion, not Amiga Inc - if you say yes it is, then show me one link with a shop with some in stock and a price on it.

I completely agree with you there! Lets rather concentrate on better hardware support and software base/ports for the platforms it is already available on.

I think AmigaOS 4 is licensed to CyberstormPPC and BlizzardPPC.

Maybe it has been licensed for Cyberstorm/Blizzard PPC but its vapour ware. It has never been released (yet).

Anyway the SAM is designed for embedded market and not a tiny Amiga market, so it will be aimed there. There is no mention of an OS on the site as far as I can tell...
