News   News : APC&TCP: Project Guru Book Reprint Discontinued
posted by AndreasM on 15-May-2008 7:25:42 (13635 reads)
It is already known that we try to reprint the English Amiga Guru Book by Ralph Babel.
Some additions were also planned to the original book.

The German Amiga Guru Book is available for some time now.

Nevertheless some Amiga users needed to put some pirated copies of the book online.

The print material is ready and actually we wanted to give it to the printing press.

But since several weeks there is a torrent with a pirated copy of the English Amiga Guru Book online.

Due to the fact that some Amiga users don't show up any support towards those who keep their platform up and try to supply them with information this project is hereby discontinued.

That's why the Amiga Future project AGG which should be financed through the reprint has also been discontinued.

Original statement by Ralph Babel:

Unfortunately, the release of the 800-page extended edition of the Amiga Guru Book (covering OS 3.x and beyond) scheduled for April was preempted by some fool seeding a scan of the older version into one of those pirate-to-pirate networks, eliminating all hopes of me ever being able to recover the cost of a reprint, so the project had to be stopped immediately to avoid further loss of time and money. Thank you, Keith.

It isn't the act itself that bothers me but rather the total lack of respect for copyright demonstrated by members of our community. In this case the copyright owner is even easy to get a hold of -- a common excuse for piracy is that you couldn't ask for permission if you wanted to.

I would be pleasantly surprised if any of the people committing the crime actually tried to get permission from Mr. Babel, was denied, and then copied the book. At least then I'd know we have a shred of respect for copyright owners around here.

Yeah, this s*cks big time.

And like others have said, I'm also still in the market for an English version, whether sold in electronic or physical form. This in spite of having already long ago bought the German version. But then again, I also bought OS4 Classic (and OS 3.5 and 3.9 back then) in spite of being a beta tester who also gets a free copy.

And I know most of you guys do similar stuff, buying primarily for the supporting effect and hoping it will be enough to get or keep things afloat. This is why it hurts extra bad when those kiddies cr*p all over us with their leaking minority complexes.

Best regards,

Niels

Hire a bounty for the price of the reprint, but instead to reprint it phisically, then get the money for yourself and release the Guru Book for free on internet...

I say: offer it as a print-on-demand product through lulu. NO printing investment required.

I understand why you would be disappointed. I agree with other posters in that you should have a presale. If you sell enough copies, then print the book. If not, return the money less whatever admin fee you would have to pay for the transaction and no one is out any money.

I can't stand PDF books unless they are just library references where you are just looking up parameters and function calls.

It took me a long time to find a copy of the original GURU book and I paid through the nose for it but it was worth it. I would love to have an updated copy.

Gah! I was waiting for this to come out. Another sale here if you do go ahead with it. I hate reading from screen. I want the book!! Especially as the new book has been extended to include OS3.9 and beyond. Way to make it tough for new blood to get into the scene.

If you, in 2008, don´t understand that your intellectual property is going to be pirated. I don´t trust you to write any book I´m going to read.

To be brutally honest, the people making such books available on P2P networks probably do not know or care about the planned reprint of the book. Your actions certainly won't stop them, and most likely will just encourage them (since the lack of any printed copy is just further reason to get a dodgy P2P copy).

All I can say is that I think 99% of the people who WERE going to buy the book would still do so, while the lack of P2P copies would NOT have made more than 5% of those pirates buy the planned book. I.E. I do not believe sales will be greatly affected.

All this does is punish the honest customers, and *encourage* them to become pirates themselves...

BTW, I think the suggestion of a Print-On-Demand book is good. Don't Amazon offer something like that?

Still, it is entirely your decision, and we will have to respect it.

That's a pity. So now the pirate pdf is the only source for this book. Surely the additions would be worth something? As would be having a proper printed copy instead of a pdf.

How many copies do you need to sell to make it worthwhile? I'd buy this if it were printed.

Hans

Very disappointed to hear this I've been waiting to buy this since April '07 when they first announced the reprint.

However, I'm sure there were pirated versions around when they first announced it back in 2007? What has changed this since then?

Hopefully they will reconsider?

Count me in as another potential buyer.

I would pay into a 'bounty' or 'pre-payment' for this item.

This is an invaluable book! Please do not let the time spent on this be for nothing.

Those that did that do not deserve the name of Amigan. They should go away and buy a PC!
Lamers!

@Ralph

I would buy a book even if I don't have any use of it (I'm not a developer). What about counting how many people would buy it?

Edit: and I'm ready to prepay. No problem.

@AndreasM

Please, accept preorders for the book. I'm sure many people would buy it. I'm an Amiga Future subscriber and I would love to have a printed copy of the book.

A properly printed version can't be replaced with a crap PDF.

If you decide to accept preorders (I beg you to do that) count me in!

It would be a good idea to accept preorders now, since the issue is known now.

Thank you for that!

I still do not understand why Ralph would not want the book to be reprinted (as we (the buyers) are not the pirates, we do not need to be punished for something we did not do, and as we would buy the book even if we are now aware of the pirated copy...) so I still hope!
