hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : DigiBoosterPro 3: Public betatesting
posted by AndreasM on 12-Feb-2011 13:41:44 (7760 reads)
After a long period of closed testing the DigiBooster 3 music tracker enters the public beta stage. The main goal of public betatesting is to check program core stability and performance on different operating systems and hardware configurations. Demo versions of DigiBooster 3 for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS are available for download on the official DigiBooster website. Please note that this is not a release candidate. Many important features still wait to be implemented. It is highly recommended to read a "readme" file after installation.

The key features of the new DigiBooster 3 are:

- Fully scalable MUI graphic interface with themes.
- New player engine, portable and AHI independent.
- Backwards compatible with DigiBoosterPro 2.x (the same module format).
- PowerPC native versions for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS.

Nice to try out the beta. Looks nice even with mui on OS4 A1G4XE :) Doesnt feel slow here.
Loaded a couple of dbm modules and all played ok. No crashes.
Havent tried doing music.

Continue the good work and i hope to see midi support in future so we with HW synthesizers can use it :) Its good that at least one amiga tracker is on work so wonderfull news for tracker people :)

@Tuxedo

Fixed it now, and it should be clickable as well - which I noticed wasn't working a second ago.

Perhaps that coder reads it in some way or another.

Yes, I'm reading it .

First I have to say I do not like MUI but when some nice GFX Artist can take a look at it and overwork the layout here and there I can live with that as long as it stays as fast as it is now.

DigiBooster 3 is partially skinnable. I don't know if you've run DigiBooster with your default MUI setup or tried to set the default AmigaOS 4 theme in the program config. kas1e posted some screenshots above. Of course more themes can (and will) be designed.

Playback is ok so far, I would say not better than Milkytracker would handle DBM Mods more like it would be an XM mod, but fast and without much latency.

Some effects have been tweaked. The most important change is that portamento unit is no more 42 Hz of sampling rate, but 1/8 of a semitone. Also DSP echo is not yet implemented. DigiBoosterPro 2.x backward compatibility is important, but it is not a holy grail so some differencies will stay.

The Axx volume slide Command is broken, when I slide down with A11 for example it slides down to fast, A01 slide up is ok.

A11 effect would be a bit strange as it specifies slide up and down at the same time. The proper forms are A0x and Ax0. Tracker behaviour on such an effect is unspecified.

Another AHI related desease, the Volume is to quite, when I pushed up the Volume booster up to +26db I do not even reach the -6db bugged AHI OS Volume level, my Digital Converter shows -15db. Normal would be 0db ;)

No, it would not be normal. You can reach 0 dB peak level when you drive all tracks with the full amplitude, which is rarely a case. Then you have this -6 dB AHI loss and finally it may be that your Digital Converter shows not peak but RMS (or VU) level. You can verify it by playing a full amplitude sine wave on all tracks. Then DigiBooster level meter should display 0 dB with main volume slider at 0 dB. AHI will make -6 dB of it at the audio output and then your Converter should show -6 dB too if it is scaled for peak level.

I know Hyperion does not care about Sound quality so AHI V6 will stay bugged as it is but please try to implement some Kind of automatic volume boost like AmigaAMP or Tunenet does so the dynamic is correct again.

In fact DigiBooster 3 player does not depend on AHI. AHI is only used for sending the audio stream to the hardware. In theory DB3 can bypass AHI completely, but of course writing custom drivers for all the audio hardware used in AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS machines is out of question. In the next beta I will try to use "stereo" instead of "stereo++" mode, so I can reduce this 6 dB loss to 3 dB or maybe 0.

SuperB news for all tracker fans! I see you created the hardest part - converted whole program to MUI. Now you can start implementing features. I can offer you creating cool looking skin theme [in free time] :)

...for example :)

I hope MIDI will be implemented soon so Amigas can be used for tracking again :)

Tried it, not bad at all, similar to OctaMED SS,

Anyone know where I can get some decent samples from?

Rude!

@g_kraszewski
THX for answering so quick. I did not follow DB3 progress for years, never thought anythink will happen soon.
Hm about dynamics, I can simulate nearly anything on my external gear, I allso can isolate
frequency ranges to analyse peak level, dynamics and average volume output. As I said, nothing to blame DB3 but AHI V6 is bad, very bad. Here with a Juli@ soundcard I can only use HIFI modes course it runs always in 24bit and in a few sittuations I have full dynamic too.
In the past I had an A4000TE with Repulse Soundcard, anything with S/PDIF Outputs connected to external gear and it was running AHI V5. NEver had dynamic problems there. So let'S see if someone will ever overwork AHI V6 for better dynamic handling.

Can you tell us someting about MIDI inside DB3? What features will be implemented when it will come someday?

As I said, nothing to blame DB3 but AHI V6 is bad, very bad.

AHI is needed by DB3 only for audio output. All mixing, resampling, effects, postprocessing is done inside the program. AHI just gets stereo 16-bit stream to be played. It is then technically possible to bypass the AHI entirely. It requires however that some simple driver is to be written for every supported sound HW, which is an enormous work. On the other hand AHI bypass may be optional, only for some cards. There is also a possibility to lock hardware and talk to AHI sublibrary directly, but it is a bit hacky.

For now the best way would be to use "stereo" mode instead of "stereo++". Too bad many AHI drivers do not have this mode, so I can do nothing.

Can you tell us someting about MIDI inside DB3? What features will be implemented when it will come someday?

The first thing would be MIDI input support to be able to use instrument keyboard instead of two octaves simulated on computer keyboard. I also consider supporting MIDI controllers for manipulating GUI elements like sliders and knobs, of course only those audio related.

MIDI output (and then using DB3 as a MIDI sequencer) is also possible, but I need to gain some experience in MIDI to decide how to implement it best. My first ideas are that it can be done on instrument level (just some instruments are assigned to MIDI) or track level (some tracks are assigned to MIDI).

Mmm volume slider is inverted using the mouse wheel ?

Scrolling down it up the volume and viceversa.

I'm using the OS4 version

Seems to be an unique feature of AmigaOS 4 MUI. I will add a reversion.

Ok, works good here on the AmigaOne SE G3.

Just the sound is short interupted when i am doing other stuff on the workbench.

My son has tested it a bit and he says it is good so fare but he misses the DBP2
things he is used to use.

Great work, thanks.

Try to increase the player process priority in the program configuration window (the first "Audio" tab). It is at 0 by default, which may interfere with intensive Workbench operations. Setting it to 1 should be enough.
