Events : Get an AROS USB Stick at Amiganoid 2011 |
posted by gerograph on 30-Aug-2011 9:43:41 (4837 reads) |
As already announced here, AMIGANOID 2011 will be held on 17th of September ins Essen:
Start: 11am Unperfekthaus Room (Raum) 154 Friedrich-Ebert-Str. 18 45127 Essen-Stadtmitte
As Highlight we will sell Amiga-/AROS compatible USB Sticks (4GB) capable of booting directly into IcAros 1.3.1 Amiganoid Edition. The price will only be (about) 3.50 €. The good price is accomplished by our sponsors "geobiz.de" and "Ares Computers".*
Speaking of Amiganoid, it is not intended to be a fair/exhibition, it is rather a big meeting where you will meet other Amigans. Therefore drinks and buffet will be provided (actually there is a compulsary 6,50€ "all you can drink flatrate"). Main focus will be on AROS, but AmigaOS and MorphOS will also be on the show:
- Broadway Aros distro on x86 hardware - Aros on ARM hardware (Efika MX) - Icaros Aros distro and others - the powerful alternative: MorphOS - the original is alive: AmigaOS 4.x on new hardware - AmigaOS 1.0 to 3.9 "Oldschool" on new hardware

*hurry, there is only a limited number of stick available !

But if you like IcAROS you can donate to paolo. As far as i remember everyone who donated more than 20Euro got a free stick. |
Yes, I sent a Icaros USB stick to my best donors in the past (who donated 30 euros or more, not 20). Unluckily I ordered just 10 of them and sent 5 or 6 to them. I used the others for testing and now they look a little ruined. Moreover, in the meanwhile the distribution has grown to a 2 GB size, so it doesn't fit anymore in those sticks. The Amiganoid Edition is a 'stripped down' 1.3.1 Live version, with some AROS games and the two ex-commercial adventures "Beneath a Steel Sky" and "Drascula" removed from ScummVM.
In a nutshell, I can still make a Icaros stick to people who donate to me, but it will take some time...Last edited by paolone on 03-Sep-2011 at 01:33 PM.

| I suppose you should run some sort of a merchandise on Icaros site.
Such distribution is very much convenient, also considering the fact that many PCs turn netbooks nowadays. And booting Icaros CD on a netbook is not a pleasure at all.
Besides all modern Amiga items have collective power, I already got AmiKit CD, AF Premium, OS4 T-shirt and would be happy to get an original AROS stick, even if it fails to boot. Such items are rare nowadays already so they pose a certain value added (opposed to a downloaded iso file). Last edited by DiskDoctor on 04-Sep-2011 at 11:53 AM. | I will explain why I don't sell Icaros Desktop and I do not plan to sell it in any form.
1. Icaros is Icaros thanks to the work of other people. My part on it is just placing all things together and writing some nice scripts that glue some part each other in order to gain a better result (just think how easy is to set up Amiga Forever running in coherency mode, rather than a do-it-yourself solution). Those people, indeed, create wonderful programs and a great operating system. They deserve a payment much more than me. And that's basically why I always end up spending more on bounties than what I earn with donations. Since I can't pay them the right amount of money, the right thing to do is creating a free distribution either.
2. Some AROS components (such as the CDVDFS module) are not distributed under the terms of the APL, but in a much more grey area of "redistributable for non commercial use" which actually forbid me to legally sell them with the distribution. And having a DVD-bootable OS which can't use DVDs or CDs is not a good idea at all. The day someone will kindly re-release his CDFS code under the APL, or someone else will rewrite the whole thing, I might be tempted...
3. Selling things would complicate my life with taxes and commercial laws to follow. I should also raise the bar of stability and security, and a serious user support (either by telephone or via email/web) should be mandatory. All these things require money I haven't and, worst of all, I won't recoup selling Icaros pendrives or re-brandized re-furbished note/netbooks. It's a hobby, I want it stuck to be a hobby. |

| Understood.
Just make sure you place the "higher donor USB gift" information so that it is visible. _________________ Amiga 1200 + WARP 1260 + AmigaOS 3.2
