Not so easy when you live in a country where you have to first pay taxes and then the most expensive toll handling fees in all the world just for importing it through ebay. On top of that you have the shipping costs. |
I imported my PowerBook G4 from the USA to the UK and had to pay import taxes and insured Airmail costs and it still cost less than buying one from eBay UK at the time.
Norway is part of the EEA and has free trade with the EU States so you shouldn't have to pay any import tax if you buy from your neighbour Sweden AFAIK.

The Norwegian equalent to ebay rarely has such systems. It is just not worth it for a outdated underpowered system. I want a modern but affordable system that can handle cpu intensive tasks like hd video. |
Then use a PC. No Amiga is powerful enough for that though MorphOS on a G5 will play HD video though. Quote:
The only thing that can save MorphOS is by porting it to x86. |
Use AROS if you are that much in need of an Amiga OS on super fast hardware. |

I take back what I said about the ibook g4.. This is what happens when you stop visiting amiga sites for a longer period of time. Good they finally ported it so that I can actually use the ibook for something. |
Perish the thought that you should read the link in the news article to get the facts before posting a comment. ;)
Best of luck with the iBook, MorphOS is lightning fast. |

That surprised me as well.. Even browsing/scrolling feels as responsive as a modern machine. I wish it had a slightly faster cpu so that it could handle hd videos though. |

How can anyone think that MorphOS will survive in long term if it does not move to new hardware?? Eventually those powerbooks and mac minis will become too slow and outdated as well, which i think is already pretty much the case |
The funny part is that even a 200 euro hardware for MorphOS is nearly as fast as the fastest available AmigaOS4 hardware available for 2000++ Euro, so lets go for AROS then.
I always wonder what software are you guys are using? OWB on some 933 Mhz Mac is way faster than any PC and any x86 Mac around. I use my system for everything and the funny part is. I have faster systems which I don´t use because the additional speed makes no sense to me.

| @geit This is why I gave up on OS4.x quite some time ago. I have a Sam 440ep myself, but it has been unused for well over a year because it is so slow that it is unusable even for basic web browsing. But my issue is that I want to use a Amiga like OS more as a main system, and for me that is not possible unless it can handle cpu intensive stuff like streaming hd video. Even my g4 1.4ghz ibook is a little bit too slow for that, so even though it is fast enough for everything else it is still not capable of hd video which is pretty important for me.
And personally I think as it is now that AROS is the one that looks like might have a future, but it was still not quite there when it came to hardware support and stability last time i checked it out.
I really hope the MOS team has some plans to move away from PPC. Either way I think will buy a license and use my ibook as a second computer for things like web browsing, music playback and emulation. |

after browsing through 3.3 I did not spot any themes changer (or whatever), so that one could try some more Amigalike desktop than default MOS. | If you just want ot change the appearance of windows etc, then the global MUI settings (all MUI applications including Ambient) can be changed in: |
And of course you can change intuition skins like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4NSxT_Zsk8
You can select skin per screen, which is pretty nice touch. _________________ - The wiki based MorphOS Library - Your starting point for MorphOS - Software made by jPV^RNO

You could sell the iBook for 100% profit then use the proceeds to buy a 1.67GHz PowerBook that should play 720p video or if you need 1080p you could pay about the same money for a G5 tower.
My 2.7GHz DP G5 cost £195 + £25 shipping to the UK from Spain. The guy I bought it from has loads of different PPC Macs and charges £25 or less to ship anywhere worldwide.
I can put you in contact with him if you like?
ps If you want an even faster browsing experience with Odyssey, give it it's own public screen and disable Enhanced Display.Last edited by IntuitionAmiga on 25-Sep-2013 at 10:14 AM.

Don't exaggerate. OWB is quick, no doubt and I use it all the time, but saying OWB would be quicker than other pc browsers is a bit bold. There are many sites that are much more quicker on pc browsers, particularly all that JS intensive sites. It's not a mystery why that is so, a JS JIT on x86 helps a lot,(Chrome on my lousy Atom netbook is way qucker on many sites than OWB on my 1.67 GHz Powerbook). On the other side for example youtube works quicker with OWB/MorphOS than most other solutions (even with more powerful hardware). I use OWB all the time, it's fast and compatible enough and the combination of OWB/MorphOS is pretty secure (security by obscurity though). But it is not the fastest browser out there in general. It is fast enough though. _________________ My programs: via.bckrs.de MorphOS user since V0.4 (2001)

So if you convert your H264 videos to DivX you can watch them on your iBook. |
That is not an option. Not only does it degrade quality noticeable, but it also take a long time. A pc that I use as a main system should be able to play standard HD videos using h264 or x264 and also be able to stream these over the internet like for example when using youtube. And I highly doubt that 200 extra mhz by buying a higher end model would fix this issue...
Meanwhile my old phenom 2 that I found in trash year(s) ago can handle several 1080p streams at same time without any slowdowns/dropped frames.
And in few years they will move on to even higher resolutions and compression methods that use even more cpu... This is why MOS cannot stay ppc forever if they plan on surviving. With each year that passes we are left further behind..Last edited by Tomas on 28-Sep-2013 at 06:08 PM.

Then your only option is to buy a G5 if you want to watch 1080p h624 videos on MorphOS.
Unless GPU accelerated decoding is added to MOS at somepoint.
edit:
I just downloaded a random 1080p MP4 from youtube and it played without a problem on the 1.67GHz Powerbook I'm typing this on using MPlayer.

Why do you need to play 1080p stuff on your iBook anyway? The resolution of the screen is not even close to 1920x1080. Last edited by IntuitionAmiga on 29-Sep-2013 at 12:24 PM.
