I'm still a bit puzzled as to why you had to have a booting machine for Pianeta. |
It's always a hard decision: Do I show something that's not finished, or not ? If you do, people might be dissapointed, if you don't, people might think it's not there.
The idea was that it was necessary to show something. And to be honest, I don't think it's slow. I tested this all on my machine here, and it was very fast and responsive, that's why I was a bit puzzled when all those "it's slow" comments came up.

btw. am i right in saying that graphics.library does not need to be rewritten for the CPPC version, but only converted to PPC? (i'm no expert, to say the least) |
Yes, that's right, although parts of graphics are still assembly _________________ Thomas, the kernel guy

Yep, so true.
Is there any particular reason why the graphics system (or the conversion to PPC) has been left to do last (considering the fact that in demos, OS4 is judged on it's speed when using the GUI, the responsivness,...) _________________ A.miga D.emoscene A.rchive

That's okay Thomas, I think you guys have done a tremendous job on this. Just know that most of us are looking at this with big smiles on our faces. We know it's going to be good when it's all finished. I am personally glad that it was shown. God knows Morphos has been shown in worse light than that. Just look at the multiple (seemingly uncontrollable) reboots it did during the AmiWest 2003 while on live demo. I'm not saying that to flame Morphos, just to tell people, don't throw stones if you live in a glass house!
I think alot of the "slow" response people talked about was due to bad quality video as well, so there's my take on it! |

graphics.library has always been our "problem child". It's really one of the oldest parts of the whole thing, with lots of assembly in it. Parts of it have been converted to C but still not everything.
Plus, Picasso96 still contains large portions of assembler code. So the decision was made that first the rest of the system is addresses, and then a decision would be made depending on the performance we get then. Obviously, the graphics parts are still a bottleneck _________________ Thomas, the kernel guy

In the videos taken at "Pianeta Amiga" on Saturday (when, as reported, some settings aren't fine tuned) the responsiveness and the "refreshment" of the GUI aren't... "Amiga-speeded" So all the discussions came out without taking care of the fact that the shown version of OS4 was an early alpha...

Anyone has a video of the presentation taken Sunday ? (Also if some visitors of the show said the Cyberstorm version was slow too... ) _________________ ------------------------------- AmigaOS, the last hope...

| Mike, the Australia OS4 tour is scheduled for well into october. Do you think we'll see the A1 boot OS4 in Oz? And what state it would be in, same, similar or better?
I guess one of the hyperion guys can answere this too ;) |

TBH when I read all those comments I was expecting it to crawl. When I did see the clip at home it looked pretty fine to me, faster than my 604e/233 060/50 CVPPC combo doing solid moves/resizes. The only sluggish part I could make out was redrawing of the "damaged" window areas. Some people I feel just like to nitpick for the sake of nitpicking. _________________ Test sig (new)
