Internet News   Internet News : VoIP (Second phone over DSL) tests by Australian ISP
posted by vortexau on 5-Mar-2004 7:08:02 (1726 reads)
From PC World comes this story about Swiftel to offer DSL users an extra phone line.

It appears that Swiftel, the ISP that I presently use for DSL, is trialing a VoIP Service -- a second phone line service for its broadband customers to run over their DSL connection.

Quote:
Swiftel director Colin Marland coined the service "hybrid VoIP". The second phone line operates through an interface (black box) that converts the Voice over IP (VoIP) transmission from the customer's DSL Internet connection to analogue at the gateway between the PSTN and IP networks.

Same thing in Denmark:

kabelnettet

No registration fee, it's free when calling via the internet, prices from 9 øre (1.5 cent US) when calling to the normal phone net. You only need the box, which is DKR 995,- (US$ 155 or so), ADSL or similar and then you connect your normal phone.

With telephony like this, One should have been a teenage girl and not a dude in his 30'ies.

From: . . outside the Pod-bay; Australia

What I'm wondering is it THIS type of service could enable eFaxing (over VoIP-type service) on top of ADSL?
