Sep. 01, 2004

SciTech has released a software product designed to enable PowerPC based systems to use standard x86 graphics hardware. Are you sure? Scitech doesn't credit hyperion at all on their site. The don't even mention Amiga OS 4 as one of the supported PowerPC OSes, only Linux.

[Edit]
sorry I just saw the post by Rogue.

Ehmmm....wasn't the deal that SciTech port the drivers to PPC and Hyperion does 3D drivers for them?

@ Russ

We've got nothing to do with this.

Actually, the deal is that we've licensed the SNAP driver technology from SciTech. Since this requires a port to PPC, SciTech, being experts in Linux, ported SNAP to PowerPC Linux.

I feel the urge to correct this again here.

The emulator in U-Boot is the SciTech emulator, written by Scitech, not by Hyperion. SNAP on PowerPC Linux is done by SciTech, not Hyperion. We have nothing to do with it. We *are* in the process of porting SNAP to OS 4, but that is all our involvement.

If at all, the only credit we can claim is that we corrected one or two minor bugs in the emulator and extended one of the incompletely emulated opcodes to include additional functionality that we needed, but that is all. The emulator, SNAP and the SciTech IES are all SciTech's work!

@all

I'm busy hiding my head in shame....

I think I lead everyone astray with my earlier posting on the "other thread"...

I will now go hide back under my rock now...

IIRC was it Steve Wendt from SciTech that made the port to PPC.

[edit] sorry... my fault... It was Olivier Singla, if I'm not totally wrong

Yep...

I'm a twit.... I did find the original referance I was thinking of and Hyperion ALWAYS said SciTech would do the porting...

Just in case anyone is interested:

Original Link
Quote:
"SciTech is currently in the process of migrating SNAP to Linux PPC, which will take care of all the nasty endian problems we would have to deal with otherwise."

Onother link
Quote:
"SciTech successfully ported their SNAP 2D driver architecture to LinuxPPC and GCC."

But I'm now intersted in seeing how accurate this prediction is:

Just to prove I'm not making it up...
Quote:
"Once that process is completed, we expect to be able to integrate SNAP into AmigaOS 4.0 in a matter of no more than 2 weeks, based on the experience integrating SNAP into other operating systems."

Regards
Darren

edit: fixed some shocking typos and put url's in links and quotes in quotes...

@newbee:

It will be impossible to tell from the outside how long Hyperion will take to port Snap to OS4, if they put the new video drivers in an update with other changes. Anything over a couple of days could be explained by the time it took to make the other changes.

Snap require quite a lot of time to be ported...

The developer think that it can be released also after OS4 (final) with an update then I think that there aren't elements to hold the breath...

Anyway, if the "other" drivers for the most used video cards by the "amigaoners" are as good as it seems...
