Events   Events : AmigaOS 4.0 update to be shown in France next weekend
   posted by elwood on 24-Sep-2004 7:53:47 (8886 reads)
At the Alchimie 4 show in France this week-end, you'll be able to see what you'll get in the soon to be released OS4 update. And much more:

- AudioEvolution (lastest beta)
- lastest Moovid version (if the author sends it to me)
- AmigaOne doing UDMA (with no data loss of course)

@riksweeney

Ultra Direct Memory Access

Basically it means that you can transfer data from one area of memory to another without involving the CPU. A typical example would be transferring data directly from the harddrive to main memory.

It's faster.

Ultra DMA is an extension of the ATA hard disk interface that theoretically allows burst data transfer rates of 33.3 megabytes (MB) per second. This is double the ATA-2/ATA-3 standard of 16.6 MB per second. Using Ultra DMA can result in a 40 percent increase in performance over the ATA-2/ATA-3 standard. The performance improvement is a result of the improved data rate of the drive itself.

Oh, and I believe they said it wouldn't ever work properly on the AmigaOne...

All we're waiting for now is one of two replies I believe (probably both)

1) Its not working until I have it on my machine (typically from someone without an A1 so will never have it )

2) It Cant ever work properly because its a software fix to a hardware bug in the Artica chip.

This isnt to say this is my opinion of course, merely predicting the responses that will turn up

Mark

I dont spose the new serial.device will be demoed eh ?!

also, chaps, just cos someone has an UPDATEd OS4.0 doesnt mean he has the UPDATE - there could well be the installer to do yet, and that needs testing in itself !

anyroadup (said the Himalayan mountain guide), keep us posted !

Well, the news topic says AmigaOS 4.0 update, so I take it as it is the OS4-PR update that is to be shown.

Othervise it should have been the latest AmigaOS 4 beta, should it not?

@ Kay

"Oh, and I believe they said it wouldn't ever work properly on the AmigaOne..."

And by a line in a news post we know it works?!?!?!?

Don't get me wrong, I really hope it does work, but I haven't seen full DMA working on my AOne any time (using the Dev.Prerelease here).

I really hope that there is coming, but the news item can't make anyone that thinks the AOne is 'broken' change their minds. Only letting people trying to make it fail and in their attempts not succeding will change their minds (hopefully).
(And making me think that there is no problem...)

/Me, still happy since the OS4 dev.prerelease release!

I've seen working DMA, it was with Linux though, and after a while Linux disabled it by itself, due to too many ide-timeouts.
But still, it was there

And as people has said before that without DMA there should be no sound and so on (or what it was), so sure DMA works. But not full DMA in any public OS for the AOne (I haven't seen any Linux with 100% working DMA and the prerelease OS4 does not have it either).

Hopefully we will have both Linux and OS4 with full DMA support for the AOne in the future, really looking forward to that, but as of now we don't have it (betatesters and developer may have it, but I can't comment on that as I have not seen it)!

I'm just saying that a line in a news item doesn't count as proof that OS4 has 100% functional DMA. We just have to wait and see!

Is the DMA enabled in the update?
Is petunia usable in the update?

Never mind, I will see it tomorrow.

@Mark
3) It's not working until I have seen it running on my A1 machine because I don't trust those nasty OS4 developers to do things correctly (hi Menthos)
