@DrBomcrater

I would be interested in hearing what in glods green hearth gave you that idea.

@olegil

Check the uA1-I specs that Eyetech published and there's one glaring omission : the VIA 686B South Bridge. This may just be an oversight but since the same specs plainly show the 'C' model as having the 686B, I don't buy that. There's also been ample time for Eyetech to correct the specs if they're inaccurate.

Since there's no mention of any South Bridge at all, it seems like the 'I' model doesn't have one.

Building an Articia-S based board without a South Bridge would be a nightmare. You can implement the IDE and USB functions easily enough using common controller chips, but what about all the other SB functions? Interrupt control, legacy DMA, power management, PS/2 ports, serial, parallel, real-time clock, SMBus, FDC, etc. I'm not saying it can't be done using seperate chips, but on such a small board layout issues and the extra cost would be killers and it would require non-trivial modifications to OS4 and U-Boot.

The only plausible explanation I can see (other then Eyetech being mad and actually using a cluster of ICs to do the job) comes from this part of the Articia Sa product brief :

"...by incorporating all critical functionalities such as the programmable Interrupt Controller, the enhanced DMA engine, the integrated Clock Generator, and the Global Timers in one single package, Articia Sa truly realizes ?total solution.? "

The Articia P blurb says mostly the same thing, and the block diagram of the chip shows an interrupt controller, DMA engine, SMBus, power management, etc, all present. Using an Sa or P you could build a system without a Southbridge quite easily. And MAI's site lists the Articia Sa and P as sampling in Q3 2004, so it's not much of a jump to imagine one of them showing up in a favoured customer's new products in Q4...

I'm very interested to find out the facts of this matter, even if they prove me wrong

I'll put you out of your misery: both the C and I versions use the Articia S.

On the C the VIA 686B is present.

I'm not sure about the I.

@DrBombcrater:

See here:

http://www.eyetech.co.uk/addbar.php?Address=/NEWS/TWONE001.HTM

The word "south" doesn't occur in the spec at all.
The IDE and sound controllers are listed, though.

Edit:
And if someone feels responsible for this page:
http://www.intuitionbase.com/static.php?section=microover

I can only say it is hopelessly out of tune with reality and needs a shape-up.

OK, you're wrong.

The µA1-I uses the Articia S Northbridge and uses the 686B southbridge (for legacy I/O, interrupt controller etc). But the 'I' also uses the SII0680 chip rather than the IDE controller built into the VIA.

Perhaps you should update the published information on the uA1-I to reflect that. At present the specs suggest it doesn't use the 686B and that, IMHO, would be a pretty major plus point if it were actually the case.
