hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : AmigaOS 4.0 Replacement CDs
   posted by Rogue on 10-Jan-2005 10:11:17 (6679 reads)
Leuven, Belgium - 10 January, 2005

As a service to our loyal customers without broadband internet, Hyperion Entertainment in collaboration with Soft 3 is now offering all registered Amiga OS 4.0 users the possibility to order a professionally duplicated CD to replace the original Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release CD which came with your AmigaOne SE or XE.

The new CD not only contains the first Amiga OS 4.0 update and updated SDK which are available for download from our site but also a substantially reworked and updated ?contribution folder?.

MicroA1 customers need not apply as this CD should already be in their possession.

Further details can be found here

If I'm not mistaken, this is not a mandatory thing. It does say "customers without broadband internet" ~ so it is primarily aimed at those users.. later it writes "now offering all registered Amiga OS 4.0 users the possibility to order". So I believe it is an option for those who would like the newer release of OS4 on CD as opposed to having to download the updates. Also I don't see what is wrong with the comparison to PC comapanies and their CD exchange programs... a business is a business. People, some things need not be so tragic you know...

@amigamagia

What I wanted to say is that it is normal procedure.

I personally think it is a good idea.

I would like to commend Hyperion on it.

Way to go and support the end users.

@Theodosius

It's impossible to do something to the Amiga community without a bunch of people whining about it and you KNOW it

I know!

The old cd's are actually rare collector items worth a fortune on the black market.

...Or.

It will become a rare collector item when Hyperion destroyed all old cd?s but one.

@fjudde

I think the word you're looking for is "memorabilia."

utter guff. I cant believe what I read sometimes !
first OS4 PRErelease (just so were absolutely sure) CD is worth someting ? maybe as a mug mat, but not a lot else - lemme guess the Update1 CD looks EXACTLY THE SAME, right ? all this fuss over (compared to current public offering) a half worj#king OS with big chunks still emulated, and no serial drivers. sheesh.

I think I'll send mine off (as soon as someone says whether I can write a cheque for Pounds sterling or not )

First full release of os 4.0 ? THAT'll be worth something !

@mjohnson

I prefer Mammoribilia !

I gotta agree w/ mjohnson. Some of us are a bit sentimental..
Now I must thank Hyperion all the same. It is things like this that I like to gloat to pc & Mac users about . So for thoes people that want the update cd and don't mind trading the old one for it, I say "cool, go for it". But I have already downloaded update 2 from Hyperion's web site. I don't really need it on cd. I would like the new contributions if it is a significant change from what I already have though. Despite that I'm not going to trade an object that has brought me such joy to get it. If I can download it from Hyperion's site as I have done before then I would consider it. ... else I'll wait on the next update or final release. It's no biggie, I can wait.

I still have my OS floppies (several versions), my OS3.5 CD and 3.9 CD

and every other original floppy of every program i ever bought. not to mention my amiga 2000.

some of us are just THAT sentimental.

I don't have an AmigaONE or the pre-release CD, but I wouldn't want to give that up either if i did. (and i would get the files off the web, anyway.)

I think this is a great service to provide to those that want it. and no one is holding a gun to anyone's head.

choice: isn't that what amiga is all about?

Not true, I got my µA1 in the middle of January & still don't have an official OS4 disk with serial number. I can't register for updates. I had to get another user to email me Update2. I've heard maybe the middle of February before their available, but who knows.
