Internet News   Internet News : Beware weather program coders and users!!
posted by Ferry on 25-Apr-2005 8:54:50 (3150 reads)
Taken from BetaNews:

Quote:
The Internet has made weather data more freely accessible to those who want it. Thanks to new policies instituted by the National Weather Service, users can obtain free access to such things as live radar, weather forecasts, and even receive weather on their cell phones. However, a bill introduced last week by Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) may end all that.

"NOAA's actions threaten the continued success of the commercial weather industry," Santorum said in a Senate session last week. "It's not an easy prospect for a business to attract advertisers, subscribers, or investors when the government is providing similar products and services for free."

The end of free weather progs? Well, at least those using U.S. public forecast services... I really hope this action will not spread over other countries.

Saluditos,

Ferrán.

Something similar going on with satellite tracking data provided by the US gov't. up until recently you could use a number of websites to download telemetery data for tracking the weather/ham radio sats, but this has now changed and you have to sign up to the govt website that distributes the data, but one thing in the user agreement is this....

Quote:
WARNING! This web site contains data and information provided by the
U.S. Government. If you are not authorized to access this system,
disconnect now. You should have no expectation of privacy. By
continuing, you consent to your keystrokes and data content being
monitored.

So if I say yes, are they going to plant a keystroke logger on my system?

I suppose, as a weather program author myself, I should comment.

I would be surprised if this gets passed. It is like the BBC charging for access to the news on their website, companies charging before they will tell you their share price, or NASA charging for pictures or other data from the Mars and other missions.

There is also nothing to stop somebody buying access to the data and then putting it on an advertising-funded site. I'd even do this myself if the economics added up.

I also have a back-up source of data that tends to be more up-to-date than NOAA's (so obviously does not come from there), that I can switch to if necessary - although I'm not sure it carries everything (I haven't researched it thoroughly). So there are other options if they do block the data.

Chris

There's one thing I cannot understand: where this info comes from? If I'm not wrong, from public equipment (satellites, radars, etc.), be it militay or civilian, so U.S. citizens have already paid for them through taxes. Why should they pay twice for it?

Private companies can charge for whatever they want, you bought their product or you don't, i.e., you pay for it or you don't, but it's not the same case... :¬/ But, hey, perhaps it's because I'm European and I cannot understand the way U.S. Government does things... :¬|

Saluditos,

Ferrán.

Well,
Being from Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum is my senator. I'm sure he has some vested interest in this some how. this is the same crap that the US Postal service complained about when they realized the power of email over snail mail.

Hi Chris,
I have your program 'WET"; nice! Had snow here for last couple of days; yes, snow! :) I have WET's data retieval set to WDET, which is Detroit City Airport, Michigan. So, as I understand it, a city airport can be a FOS member in NOAA. I'm using the internet to talk to WDET. I'm already paying Comcast, my ISP for the gov. public data. The retieval system wasn't free to me. Is this new bill for the purpose of WDET to charge a fee for the data it gets from NWS/NOAA? Hmm, distibution of a public domain product - sounds like a political issue like charging gov. postage for email, Gack!

@Snuffy

I think it is the other way round. The data is collected from WDET by NWS/NOAA, and NWS would charge for that data, but presumably they wouldn't charge the airport for it... or maybe they would. I'm confused.

Wet connects directly to the NWS/NOAA server btw.

Chris

There are more implications to this bill than show on the surface. Emergency responders and ham radio operators who work in disastor areas rely on the NOAA data. Look at the article on QRZ. The company Accuweather has it's headquarters in the PA senator's state.

The data from the NOAA is NOT free - the weather satellites are paid for by American taxpayers. If the pay services want to be the exclusive providers of weather data, they need to launch and pay for their own satellites!

If passed this bill will result in loss of life.
