hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : AmigaOne Linux kernel 2.6.16.27
posted by Geri on 11-Aug-2006 16:51:41 (3845 reads)
I uploaded a 2.6.16.27 Linux kernel on amigaone-linux.sourceforge.net

Currently this kernel version comes without floppy support. This may also be the last 2.6.x kernel that supports the AmigaOne, until the platform code was ported from the ppc architecture to the new powerpc architecture (IIRC support for non coherent cache architectures will be removed in 2.6.18).

Hmm, something is not working on my system. I have a A1G4/800 and before had a Debian Sarge with Kernel 2.4.26. Working with quite a many warnings in the loading phase. I installed the new kernel and the modules as instructed in the Docs page of the site mentioned above. After the initial loading of the kernel & modules and supposedly starting X/KDE the system opens a window probably asking for the password (the window is shadowed, no text) and then a total lockup. Did I miss something here?

@Marko

"X/KDE the system opens a window probably asking for the password (the window is shadowed, no text) and then a total lockup"

Same problem here, but I use only five mods:

lib/modules/2.6.16.27/kernel/drivers/char/genrtc.ko
lib/modules/2.6.16.27/kernel/drivers/char/lp.ko
lib/modules/2.6.16.27/kernel/drivers/input/gameport/gameport.ko
lib/modules/2.6.16.27/kernel/fs/affs/affs.ko
lib/modules/2.6.16.27/kernel/fs/hfs/hfs.ko

and "sound" directory (sound driver/mods for mA1). Other mods dirs I delete from lib/modules/2.6.16.27/kernel and linux works OK.

I have the same problem also with 2.6.8 kernel.

Please use this kernel at least with Debian sarge or Debian etch and disable the DRI and GLX modules in /etc/X11/XF86config-4 (if you're using XFree86).

Just a newer version of the Linux kernel.

I just tried this out. It boots okay but I had ALSA working with 2.6.8 and with this 2.6.16 I get no sound, but no error requestors either. lsmod indicates the modules are loaded. ALSA seems to think it's working but make no noise.

Unless there is an extra step required for the newer kernal then yes, as it works fine under 2.6.8_a1 .

I have had timidity working as an alsa sofsysnth and used rosegarden. But all is silent with this new kernal.

Disable the snd-via82xx and snd-ac97-* kernel modules.
(Unless you have an A1 with Sigmatel chip and want to use that for audio of course )

How would I do that?
