Internet News   Internet News : Unknown Andy Warhol Creations Rediscovered - On Amiga Disks!
   posted by TheDungeonDelver on 9-Nov-2006 15:28:39 (4735 reads)
"PONTIAC, MI.- In what many have dubbed the world's first multi-media presentation on July 23rd 1985 at the Lincoln Center in New York, the maverick art legend Andy Warhol stood on stage using a new computer to paint a portrait of pop star Debbie Harry in his own unique style.

In the following months after its launch, Warhol acquired a battery of Amigas and experimented using these computers with the same enthusiasm as any medium he ever approached."

The article says it took 5 years of pain staking work to reproduce the work. I wonder how many day it would have taken if they had used an Amiga in stead of the Mac... :)

@tekmage

Yes, I'm sure that with an Amiga and the actual software Andy used, they could have reconstructed it quite easily. It's not as if Amigas or their software are rare.

Sounds like they plugged in a Catweasel and tried to figure for five years
how to read an Amiga diskimages...

Ten minutes with disk2fdi, a Win98 PC, WinUAE and Deluxe Paint - et voila (assuming they couldn't or wouldn't use Amigas). But no, they spend years using a mac.

I guess when the only tool you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.

Seems Andy Warhol is the most famous Slovak Amiga user!

I actually live down the road from Andy Warhol's brother, Paul. He actually does some strange artwork as well.

Maybe you should go down and tell him you have an Amiga and could have put that 20 frame thing together in an afternoon and not 5 years.

You have to realize that they're not recreating the video from scratch, they're recovering it from Andy's disks. Like I posted on the other thread, 15-year-old diskettes have a tendency to not be readable. The magnetic coating tends to fall off.

@syrtran

DickDoctor would've fixed that!

DiskSalv might be a better bet though... and there are specialist companies that do data recovery, I'm sure it wouldn't take them five years to get the data back, even if they weren't familiar with OFS.

It's a sure bet that most of the five years was reconstructing the anim into a format that "modern computers" could read.

There's no telling what format the original was in (I would hazard a guess at ANIM5 or one of the other IFF ANIM variants), or how it was split over multiple floppies.

If it was in a bizarre format or a strange split-disk archive then even the most hardened Amiga user may have had problems getting it to play on the hardware it was designed for - even if the disks themselves were intact.

Chris
