Events   Events : Amizaduszki 2006 - The Greatest Polish Amiga Event
   posted by mailman on 12-Nov-2006 12:03:51 (5728 reads)
Yesterday, 11th of November 2006, the event called Amizaduszki was held. It took place in Cracow in Poland.

Among previously planned presentation of Sputnik which was about to happen just before its beta release there was big surprise. Representatives of Elbox showed up and presented long-waited Dragon 1200. Everybody who decided to come could see it working. So far there are many pictures and movies to view:

you're right pab. and it's clear visible that these boards don't contain a coldfire cpu. it's an athlon 64 hence the speed. elbox only sticked their own sticker on it. as usual.

@Aminicle

I've seen the videos and the speed opening drawers and showing its contents is many times slower than my 060/50. It's even slower than my A4000T with 040/30Mhz. Even if it was an USB drive both my Algor and my Peg1 are quite faster, regardless of having a window showing TV or not (PIP shouldn't eat cpu time and TV cards use DMA to leave the data in the gfx card ram so it shouldn't slow down the system).

The speed showing the Dragon picture in AWeb is also too slow.

Do they plan to offer Coldfire optimized datatypes? Do they plan to offer AROS/AfA compiled for coldfire?

What about demos... is it possible to launch 060 demos like Starstruck, Lapsuus, and others...?

The speed of the videos was quite dissapointing... it looks like a 030, not like a next generation 060...

Is that the point ?

Point is the Dragon is there and I am sure with their past experience in hardware the problems you mention will be fast solved after some optimizing.

@Aminicle

The point is that well known coders like Piru claimed that it wouldn't run fast as many instructions aren't emulated or simply don't have the same behaviour so the emulation would be much more complex and they would have to use a JIT or other *slow* solutions to make it work faster than current 060s. And ATM it seems they were right, there's nothing that indicates me that speed will be faster than my current 060 setup.

@all the "it's vapor"-people:

Not surprising if people (myself included) think it is vapour when
(1) It was due out nearly 2 years ago (January 2005)
(2) Various milestones have been set, missed and then no news items posted to say why until months afterwards
(3) Every e-mail enquiry regarding delivery was replied with utter ####e "Due to be released next month"
(4) Elbox have a history of creating mock-ups of "upcoming products" (Elbox shark ppc, picture of the Mediator z4 on the mediator pci 1200 user guide)

Glad to see it having some progress, would be interested to see some benchmarks. Especially interested in the "two DIMM slots for the DDR-266 SDRAM" - that should speed up the system an awful lot.

@crumb
..it's about " does it exist yes or no" .... not about " how fast it is or how slow" Do you see in the newsitem here it is about speed ? no, just showing it works.

@boot-WB
Look forward... not backward.

well... dragon and "looking forward" is not quite equivalent.
"looking forward" these days would mean going the os4/morphos way and not staying on the ending 68k route...

just imho.

byebye...

You are pulling it out of the context. It's about the dragon . And not about it's role in nextgen Amigacomputing. I am also not sure Elbox is marketing it this way, it's just a classicupgrade like the way there are C64 upgrades these days. Can't you see the beauty of that?

I do, but then some would say that I am stuck in the 1950's Doo-Wopp era.

yes and no.
a release of the "shark" would be a much bigger step into the right direction, wouldn't it?

I agree, and I think the Dragon will be the perfect busboard to host it. A dragon specific Shark version would be nice. It doesn't need the resources that are already on the dragon on it's own. But i think that's another story not ?

@Aminicle (2 years of dragon vapour)
did Elbox ever release drivers for mpeg card and audigy ?
that i would liked to "get in my face".
I remember that days i had a4000 and bought mediator because
elbox said the drivers were soon to be released. then i waited
for years. then i boguht A1, run linux and today Os4. Sold a4000.

If i knew that i wouldnt get any mpeg/audigy driver i wouldnt
buy the mediator as i had all zorro stuff like gfx/ethernet/audio
etc. But thats another story. My fastata(powerflyer) was nice.
Im happy for all you people that needs and gets the dragon whenever
it comes. I hope it gets released this year so you can enjoy it.

I wish they'd posted prior to the event.

It might have been possible for a few more people to attend.

Would you like a renumeration of all of the Amiga hardware over the last twenty plus years that have been "demonstrated", that photos have been shown of, that have had great hype, even presales, and yet have never been produced?

Would you?

Vapourware is stuff that never existed.

As soon as you see it it is no longer vapourware.

Most stuff that they actually build eventually makes it to market... with a few exceptions. It's the stuff that they don't actually build but say they're going to that is the problem. Lots of wildly optimistic people out there that can't deliver.

http://www.google.com.au/search?num=100&hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2005-22,GGLG:en&defl=en&q=define:Vapourware&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title

There have been pictures of the Dragon for ages. The company said it was ready to go but couldn't get processors. Surely that's not their fault?

Which way do you see your glass? Half full or half empty?

Mine is half full!!!
