MoL packages (v0.9.72) for this kernel are available under amigaone-linux.sourceforge.net/MoL/2.6.16/. Users of the 2.6.8 kernel can use the packages under amigaone-linux.sourceforge.net/MoL/2.6.8/.

Thanks, great work! Are the 2.6.16.x kernels the latest available on Linux? The SFS support is a most welcomed addition, btw all of my partitions are SFS formatted. What about the other issues left, like AGPGART support? I remember you were searching for a debugger, how's the status with that?

No, v2.6.25 is already in the works, but the 2.6.1.6.x series is currently the lastest version that works on the A1.

AGPGART won't work on the A1. Some changes were made to the DRI layer in newer kernel versions to support platforms with non cache coherent DMA. Thus it would be worth to test PCIGART again. But I have to get a newer kernel booting first. Patches are available for v2.6.24. Unfortunately it doesn't boot yet till the login prompt.
The debugger is another story. I still have to put away some money to be able to buy such a handy tool.

Now please tell the uneducated why they should want or need this.
Not that I am stupid you see. I am asking for a friend.

A newer kernel means some bug fixed and new functionalities added. It's an update to Linux, like the OS4 updates which (usually) contain a newer kernel, too.

I haven't booted Linux since OS4-pre came out. Therefore I have 2.4.x. Can I just install this image on that install and expect it to work?

2.6.1.6.x series
...
Does Debian OK this for the Distro? If it doesn't I'm not going to touch it.
Please take no offense from me for your developments with A1 linux. I'm just not convinced linux works well on the A1 with it's weird hardware configuration. I'm really interested in more of X11 development without linux/unix references.

It depends on the rest of the Linux installation. These kernel was compiled for Debian Etch, but should work with Debian Sarge, too (although I recommend to use kernel v2.6.8 for Sarge). AFAIK Debian Woody does not support 2.6.x kernels.

@Snuffy

Debian is okay, if you talk about Debian Etch.
You're right Linux doesn't work very well on the A1 and that's why I'm working on it.

Unlucky me i did install the kernel over wrong partition. My os4 system partition. when i restarted os4 it reseted and reseted.
I used /dev/hda1 instead of /dev/hdb1 ;(

Lucky my other partitions were ok.

So i booted from os4 cd. eject and put my backup cd but my system freeze. So the only thing was to install os4 from scratch. Then booted from harddisk and copied over with the backup. Good the backup wasnt that old. Now i just need to update some libraries and some other stuff.

Last time i did the same. Installed kernel on os4 partition ;(
Before installing i thought.... i should do an backup.... naaah i will do it right i said and..... overwritten hehe.

Finally im back to os4 :)
The latest kernel is now installed. I just need to update with etch.

Can you give me an example on /etc/apt/sources.list file for etch please

And i need to update with the file that enables my soundcard (esi julia).
can you remind me which file it was Geri :)

Do i only need the kernel and the modules or some other files. i see there are several patches for download but maybe they are builtin or do i have to install them all ?

There is a good way to prevent such user errors: use the SLB to start Linux!

Here is a list of the most important and useful package repositories. At least the first 2 are needed.

You can configure your soundcard with the alsaconf command.

The patches are only needed, if you want to compile your own kernel.

Oh good, then it has nothing to do with OS4. That is what my friend wanted to know.

Just got this crazy idea:
Make my MacMini run OS4 and make my A1 run MacOS

Seriously, I tried MOL before I got my MacMini on the A1, and it was smooth enough for my needs.

Thanks for your work Geri

I have no idea which of these strange names I have installed. What if I have Woody then? How do I upgrade without putting myself in a catch 22 position where nothing works?

Is there a clean path to do it all from scratch perhaps that is easier for a newbie? I don't like the HD it is install on anyway... Waaay too loud. New from-scratsh install would be on a flash-disk

If you installed your Debian system with Ross Vumbaca's Debian install disk, then you probably have Debian Woody which comes with a 2.4.x kernel. Normally Debian outputs its version on the command line.

Upgrading can be done by changing the sources.list file and executing "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade". You have to upgrade to Debian Sarge before you can upgrade to Debian Etch. Generally I recommend to reinstall the system, but even then you have to do the incremental update to get a newer Debian version, because there is no new install disk for the A1.
I have written various posts in the Linux forum here on aw.net, where I give instructions on how to install a Debian Sarge or Etch system. But be aware that it isn't an easy task!

I use Linux on my second harddisk (xbox original 9gb harddisk) connected
on main slave sii0680ide so i dont think i can start from the SLB.
The problem wasnt how to start but when i updated the kernel. When i updated i was already logged in to linux with KDE. I just typed wrong partition to write to ;) I havent even installed MOL. I would like to but im so f* lazy to do it.

EDIT:
Ok im now under linux, updated to etch. Not much files that updated but at least its now working. Why the sound didnt work was as the modules was updated but not the kernel as i first installed it over os4 partition ;(. Now after installing on the right partition the sound work ok again. Nice to be back on both systems. Now lets do some firefoxing on pages i cant visit with amigabrowsers.

I used Geri's sources.list. Worked fine but it threw some error when using apt-get update.

Ah, that looks fine so far. I may have specified some unavailable source repositories.
The GPG errors go away, if you install the corresponding keyring packages from the repositories. You can also add them manually by using apt-key. Please take a look at the websites of the repositories to get the GPG key (or its installation instructions).
