News   News : APC&TCP: Project Guru Book Reprint Discontinued
posted by AndreasM on 15-May-2008 7:25:42 (13633 reads)
It is already known that we try to reprint the English Amiga Guru Book by Ralph Babel.
Some additions were also planned to the original book.

The German Amiga Guru Book is available for some time now.

Nevertheless some Amiga users needed to put some pirated copies of the book online.

The print material is ready and actually we wanted to give it to the printing press.

But since several weeks there is a torrent with a pirated copy of the English Amiga Guru Book online.

Due to the fact that some Amiga users don't show up any support towards those who keep their platform up and try to supply them with information this project is hereby discontinued.

That's why the Amiga Future project AGG which should be financed through the reprint has also been discontinued.

Original statement by Ralph Babel:

Unfortunately, the release of the 800-page extended edition of the Amiga Guru Book (covering OS 3.x and beyond) scheduled for April was preempted by some fool seeding a scan of the older version into one of those pirate-to-pirate networks, eliminating all hopes of me ever being able to recover the cost of a reprint, so the project had to be stopped immediately to avoid further loss of time and money. Thank you, Keith.

That's a real shame. Can't say I'm too surprised though, because the reason they decided to do a reprint was that people were getting photocopied versions of the original book. In my experience with these things, the P2P version of the book will probably be just a scan, with all the disadvantages of a paper copy and none of the advantages of a soft copy (other than the fact that it won't take up any shelf space, you can't search for stuff, cut'n'paste, etc). I can't imagine that eating too much into sales of an updated book. On the other hand, Hyperion and Amiga Inc throwing crap at each other like zoo monkeys while AmigaOS withers and dies, is probably a very good reason not to risk any Amiga related business.

I was hoping to buy a copy, but I can see why you had to take the action you did. I wish those mindless idiots would not attack a community that is already under a great deal of pressure.

IMO they don't overlap, a print book is much more worth for those who do real work then any pdf would... as is your book would present an added value, if it doesn't cost the earth the same people who otherwise want would still be buying it.

That's sad but im afraid this news just made people look for the torrent, it would probably been better not to mention it,

Indeed... Pirated copies could be found since long time but that's nothing in front of the real book: if you have ever really needed informations contained in this book, you know you would have bought a fresh updated real paper version if available. Especially an updated version would have been useful for many, but in any case the use of a paper version doesn't even compare with a .txt or .pdf one imho.
Now, the market for such a book is certainly limited nowadays, and I guess it's more likely the reason for hesitating to print it, when you are not sure to sell enough to earn the invested money. Yet again, it has nothing to do with the availability of a pirated version.
So why not sell the updated version in printable-pdf-form over the net? I guess I'm not the only one who would love (since so long btw) to support this effort despite the pirated version which will of course always exist.

You could always ask for a deposit or the money up front..
Then you will have some idea if it's worthwhile or not.

I wonder if it was possible to recover costs anyway... there are only few developers and thanks to Internet it is easier get help than it was 15 years ago.

By not printing the book you're assuming the people who pirate the book are the same as those who buy it.

You also assume that some pirates won't buy a copy either.

You're also blaming/punishing everyone for something they haven't done.

What makes you so certain the book will be a flop?

A very sound business strategy would be to take pre-orders... and if enough pre-orders eventuate you can print.

Surely that takes all the risk out of the proposition?

So because one guy put the book on a P2P network, and some people (probably most of them not even amiga developers) downloaded it, you're going to punish everyone?

@AndreasM

It's a (very) sad news indeed, I understand you might hesitate to take the risk to publish the book in this condition. Nevertheless the updated informations might really be intersting and worth publishing.
Maybe the preorder (with prepayement) could be the solution to know the exact number of interested people in order to take the decision to publish it or not.
The last solution could be an electronical diffusion, for up to 15/20 Euros I might still be interested, and this could help you recover the already engaged costs.

PS: what was the AGG project ?

my reason:

i say i would reprint the Guru-Book. after this i must delete 3 or 4x a pirate copy in the Zone from the EAB. i must delete links to pirate copies from some forums. (and get strong feedback from teh users there.) i close 2 webpages. i delete on 4 (or 3) webpages the files. i know 1 webmaster there release only the files to make us trouble.

i talk here only from the new copies are online after the user know that we would reprint the book. i dont talk from the old pirate copies.

and now the new torrent.

i make this just for fun. i dont make money with this. the pirates stolen my fun and i dont like invest more time for this.

understand this, please.

I understand this, and how frustrating it could be. I also agree you won't make big money with this (Amiga Market stopped to be a profitable market since some time now) but at least you could have recoverede your losses.

I thank you very much for your devotion to the Amiga market, you are investing much time, please don't let idiots ruin your (our) passion and enthousiasm and keep doing the good job.

I have a friend that writes instructional books. There has been some pirating of his work too. He now sells PDF versions from his web site. The PDFs are protected some how, but I'm not possitive of all the methods used...password for one. Though scans and copys circulate, he still makes profit from legitimate sales on his site. Maybe you can too. Perhaps some one like Amigakit could host some thing like this?

i'm agree with Pixie. A PDF would not be replace a real book at all.. and a copy will be mine if you reprint the book

@AndreasM

I respect your decision... But please rethink it.

I'm sure most people here would buy a copy, pirates will allways be pirates... A pirated version is *nothing* like as good as a real book, also some people (Me included) will download an eBook as a way of gauging how good the book is before purchasing a printed version, I've done this for some books (Beginning Python, Java in a Nutshell, YCPI C++)

I seriously hope you will reconsider... I would love a copy of the book!

Cheers, Alex.
