Hardware News   Hardware News : Seen at Pianeta Amiga: AMCC460 EVAL BOARD @ 1.2 GHz
   posted by Raffaele on 29-Sep-2008 16:27:26 (13493 reads)
At Pianeta Amiga, there was seen an Evaluation Board which might possibly be of interest for the future.

Here the specs:
CPU: AMCC460 @ 1,2 Ghz
RAM: DDR2 @ 400MHz
BUS: PCI Express 4x
HD Interface: SATA 2
USB 2.0 connector ports
GigaEthernet port

Quoting testimony of "Tuxedo" Italian Amiga User on AmigaPage Italy:
Here

Quote:

Quote:

The AMCC evaluation board sure was pretty, it has not only been clocked at 1.2 GHz, and has DDR2 RAM clocked at 400MHz, but also has SATA2 USB2 GigaEthernet and PCIExpress 4x, it is a pity it will take between 12 to 18 months before a possible motherboard... In the meanwhile it is better to focus on SAM440 that exists for real, as it is sufficient and suitable for the moment.

I want it now:)

So... maybe we should start a: "ACube's development speed up bounty"?
100$ x number of active Amigans should be fine ;)

This news is absolutely wrong.

The board in question is only an evaluation board from AMCC, it's not a prototype of a future SAM board.

For now there are no board (and no projects) with AMCC460 in the making.

@Admins
Please remove or modify this "news" because it's only a wild speculation and nothing is confirmed from ACube.

@Raffaele
Please, in the future refrain to post things like this as "NEWS"...

But it could be the eval board for an up coming Sam460...why do they have the board if not for a new project?

I would move this thread to the forums.

The news title says "Sam AMCC460 PROTOTYPE EVAL BOARD" and that's not true.

I know maybe this is silly question...

Is there any chance to "upgrade" only a processor in Sam440 into 460? Is this "technically" possible...

Maybe ACube could think about "socket" for PPC...

There would be no interest in changing the CPU or whatever else. The Sam440 is System On Chip (SOC) with builtin CPU and gfx chip.

About the AMCC's board based on the 460, it seems to be the same case than the AMCC 440 Yosemite evaluation board that became Sam440ep from ACube.

If I would have an advice : take a Sam440, we never know what the future will be. The overall perfomance is the same than the MicroAOne that I own and it is pretty good for my usage (audio, video, programming, web, ...).

Hi there...
According to Lecta the AMCC460 evaluation board wasnt certainly a future sam460...
And as I write:

"12/18 mesi prima di un'aeventuale scheda madre"

means exactly:

"12/18 months before a possible motherboard"

not

"12 to 18 months before it eventually reaches the state to be a useful Motherboard"

That sounds rather different...
I think the evaluation board wasnt there for chance...but htat's my thought...
But for sure now only thing we have was SAM440ep and flex...
Consider it as a "possible" future but dont get it for sure...

@thread

OK, sorted.
I am sorry that this was approved by me with errors, but as I do not read Italian, I can only use what is given to me by a 'Native Speaker' and trust that the translation is correct.

Kind regards, Yo

By the way... I think going forward, those of us on staff will be clearing any future news with another 'Native Speaker' BEFORE it is posted as 'fact'. Please understand this might mean the news waits for a bit before being posted.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.

It's not your fault, Yo.

I saw the board, i get the board in my hands, and not only the AMCC 460. But as Lecta have pointed out there are no project based on that board at the moment. It's only an evaluation board, like many other boards that Acube have in his labs. BTW i don't see any new hardware in the near future. The only new hardware we have (and it's a good hardware) is Sam 440EP and the Sam Flex.

One thing is sure: Acube is continue to work to give the Amiga users good products.

The new HW for the near future is SAM-Flex: it isn't yet available and I'm waiting for it

As true as that may be, why would ACube have bought the developer board in the first place? And why bring this particular board to the show? It suggests that they are at least considering this new chip for a future product. Of course, it would be really silly for anyone to hold off buying a SAM 440 just because their might be a better machine available 1-2 years from now.

It could be possible, but i know that we will not see any 460 in the "Near" future. The fact that acube is considering other hardware it's not a mistery, but again, not in the near future. The OS port, moreover, could take long time.

Which really begs the question of why it was even on the ACube stand to start with. It was obvious from the first posting of this board that it would lead to wild assumptions about a possible future hardware route.

Probably because AMCC is an ACube partner and as such they show each other products.

Yeah, maybe you should just buy a SAM440 and spur development of future hardware that way. This has a positive side effect - you get AmigaOS 4.1.

it's completely top secret apart from the fact it's sitting on the desk in front of us...
who could afford it anyway we assume it would cost twice the price of the sam?

@Rogue
Don't worry, I will.
So more - I'm coordinating a "joint buy" of Sam440 from my country. There will be quite a good number of boughts made that way...
