| Why doesn't the AresOne website state what the AresOne machine is specifically (I mean, what motherboard is it?). You also can't just make a driver for the ALC888, you need to make a driver for the PCI controller that controls the HD-audio chip (in this case, the ALC888). _________________ Audio Evolution http://www.audio-evolution.com

| You fail to understand that a network chip includes a PCI handling part and a HD-audio or AC'97 chip does not. For example, you can not just make an AC'97 driver and expect it to work on all motherboards or PCI cards that have an AC'97. One must write a driver for the controller chip, for example the VIA686B on an AmigaOne or the emu10kx for SB Live's, even though they use the same AC97 chip. Behind that controller is a codec in the form of AC'97, HD-audio, AKM or whatever chip. At most one could make a C file or library that different drivers can utilize, but there is no such thing as an ALC888 driver for generic use. Unless all southbridges share the same register set these days, which I doubt they do, but I'd be glad to be proven otherwise.
For the MSI board on your link, this means one would need to make a driver for the NVIDIA nForce 520 chipset and I'm not sure if there is documentation available to do that for NVidia chips. _________________ Audio Evolution http://www.audio-evolution.com

| Yeah, but all is not so bad, there is an NVidia HDaudio driver under ALSA. I hope there is documentation too. Anyway, somehow they managed to get it to work under Alsa, perhaps I can have a look if they handle different NVidia chipsets differently or if there is at least a common ground from one vendor. _________________ Audio Evolution http://www.audio-evolution.com
