Transfers through the switchboard are about 6 or 7 kilobytes per second.. Horribly slow. There are workarounds to speed it up. The pauses are just due to the latency having to use the switchboard as a proxy.
AmiMSN will have full direct connection file transfer support (using uPnP for port mapping too) before Christmas. Keep an eye out. Remember it won't work with clients that don't support direct connections (i.e Pidgin). Speed will be 96% of FTP/HTTP/IRC-DCC (for every 1352 bytes is 52 bytes of binary.. There are no acknowledgements to slow it down).
