hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : AmigaOne X1000 CPU Revealed

AmigaOne X1000 CPU revealed - the cake is no lie!

A-EON Technology is pleased to finally reveal the identity of the mystery CPU powering the AmigaOne X1000. It's none other than the uber cool PWRficient PA6T processor developed by fabless chip designer PA Semi. The PA6T-1682M is a high performance, low cost, cool running dual-core, 64-bit, 2 GHz Power CPU specifically designed for embedded military and industrial applications. PA Semi was acquired by Apple in 2008 and all indications were that they purchased the company for its intellectual property and planned to shut down the PA Semi product line. However, following demand from military and industrial users, Apple agreed to continue supplying chips to pre-existing PA Semi customers for a limited time period. Fortunately Varisys, our AmigaOne X1000 hardware partner, had a long-standing relationship with PA Semi and we were able to secure a supply of PA6T CPUs for the AmigaOne X1000 project, making it the first and most probably the only desktop computer based on the unique PA Semi CPU technology as Apple have now closed down the PA Semi product line.

Following intense speculation on several Amiga forums over the identity of the mystery CPU, Thom Holwerda, the Managing Editor of the OSNews website commented on AmigaWorld.net:-

"I can assure you all, with 110% certainty, that the X1000 will NOT carry a processor from PA Semi. If it turns out it does, I will eat my socks and post the video as proof"

We decided to give Thom an exclusive on revealing the identity of the mystery CPU inside the AmigaOne X1000. Rather than the usual staid press release and forcing Thom to eat his own socks we took pity on him and shipped him a special cake decorated with a pair of edible "Boing Ball" socks with a note saying the cake was a gift from A-EON Technology.

Read Holwerda's exclusive report on OSnews:-

Eat cake not socks!

We also wish to give special thanks to premier Amiga developer Davy Wentzler who helped to coordinate the production and delivery of the "Boing Ball" socks cake.

"The cake was no lie!"

The PA6T CPU paves the way for the introduction of SMP with AmigaOS4.x. Also check out the new multi-core CPUs being developed by Freescale, in particular the 64-bit dual core, 2.2 GHz P5020 and the 8-core, 1.5GHz P4080.

I haven't seen anyone state the the obvious, but "I told you so."

However two things seem to be out of place:

low cost

In comparison to what? What is it competing with? Everything we've heard about the X1000 says the opoosite.

2 GHz

Not again! The A1 Mk2 isn't being underclocked again!? We need these things to go faster, not slower, and at least the speed they are meant to be at.

Nice to have a military spec CPU; now all the X1000 needs is EMP shielding!

@grayghost

You have to start somewhere.
This was the dual core cpu that was available.
Once OS 4 works on a dual core cpu machine then you can adapt it to
other multilcore designs.

You also need to have enough boards in the hands of developers, betatesters and users
so development continues and any software issues are fixed.
The big benefits will be reaped in the next generation designs as by then the software base
should grow and take advantage of OS4.x in a muticore cpu setting.

Begging your pardon, but why would we want to start on a chip that has a limited production life? Unless we can secure 3-4 years of supplies of the chip....or if newer chips being designed can run programs designed for PA6T...then I am prone to wonder. My measly 2 cents...otherwise, I like the idea......

Great news, can't wait to get mine but I think we're all going to have to keep a wary eye out for the return of Doomy who will want to get his hands on a REAL military spec amiga

Nice, now reading with "thinking" at the same time. Here have been Dual Core for many years but not in an Amiga for sure. OS4 will fly and maybe the PPC, Pat or what it is will be much better and faster than the Intel or AMD.

I Hope the Hyperion Team won't still forget about us AmigaOneXE - and other Guys.
We supported OS4-4.1 and hope to be compatible along;)

Thank You.

So does this mean that once those cpus are installed in the X1000, there will be NO more X1000s ? If the plant is closed, where will the next batch come from ?

I had the same question so I asked them - the official answer I received from A-Eon is:

'Fear not, check out the new multi-core CPUs being developed by Freescale, in particular the 64-bit dual core, 2.2 GHz P5020 and the 8-core, 1.5GHz P4080.'

So no worries.
