Hardware News   Hardware News : Sam460ex available with AmigaOS 4.1
   posted by elwood on 27-Jan-2011 23:00:06 (22837 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, Italy - 27 Jan, 2011

ACube Systems Srl is pleased to announce the immediate release of Hyperion's AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 for Sam460ex. Boards and installation CDs are now shipping to resellers.

The board is running at 1.15 Ghz and allows all Amigans to use modern graphic cards thanks to its PCI express slot.
Other features include: 7 USB ports and Gigabit ethernet.

The board is available at a suggested price of 749,00 EUR (including AmigaOS 4.1).
Price excludes local taxes and shipping costs.
Sam460ex AmigaOS 4.1 version:

The version of AmigaOS 4 that will be shipped with the Sam460ex is still to be considered beta. It is made from AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 on which specific components for Sam460ex were added.
You will still have a valid AmigaOS 4 licence that allows you to download the next AmigaOS update when it will be available from Hyperion Entertainment.
Notes about the AmigaOS 4.1 CD currently shipping with Sam460ex

Currently RadeonHD driver supports the following chipsets with full 2D hardware acceleration and DDC:

* R500 (with compositing support) - Radeon X1550, X1650, X1950 and others
* R600 - Radeon HD 2400 - HD 3450 - HD 3650 and others
* R700 - Radeon HD 4350 - HD 4650

The audio driver will be released on OS4depot as soon as it is ready.

The driver for the onboard SATA port is still experimental. It is not loaded by the kicklayout file but you still can use it (at your own risk). It is located in Devs: and you can use it through Mounter.

The final version will be released with an OS update. In the meantime we suggest to use a Silicon Image 3512 PCI card or an USB-SATA combo PCI card with a Silicon Image chip.

Please read the manual for more information on the board.

It was a very long road and we wish to thank everyone for your patience and support.

@nicsoft: ?????
from all the postings ive read everywhere i had an impression that it is sam460 that is ready for months waiting with its delivery for its os4.1 version to be completed. why else would the beta testers and developers be in posession of sam460 boards, and why else is the currently to be delivered sam460 os4.1 version not complete???? if what you tell is true then it looks like sam460 os4.1 has been left in an incomplete state for months. is this what you say?

edit: even more so i find it totally unresponsible to try to sell incomplete software when there was months of time to complete and test it.

Want it or not ACube and A-eon are competitors. It is friendly competition maybe but users have to decide what is the best platform to run OS4.

It is amazingly sad how people can spoil a joyful moment like this when finally a decent machine (speed wise) come out in amigaland.

I don't care too much of bitter comments, but if I were an involved developer (hardware or software) that spent nights on a project judged by the majority of people outside the community simply crazy, I would be annoyed.

I understand that there are still many points still lacking here and there. Involved developers surely know all of them and they surely can discriminate what they can actually achieve balancing they development power.
I surely going to comment too on bad thing in the future when I've got my Sam460, but not today: It's a celebration day!

Indeed. Of course there is still some points which should be updated, but in general its new aos4 capable HW which give you possibility to use pci-e cards, and HW itself faster enough, to be even better than peg2 in some areas. No need to concetrate on mistakes or how and who write the news.

@wawa
To be honest, writing OS (even amigaos) its not _that_ easy. Of course we can think that all should be faster, and that someone should do something because of blablabl, but well .. its all pretty hard. Expectually writing of kernel code, deep os components, drivers - its all hell of time. Years, not moths. Now we only lack of audio driver (the easy driver), and the testing of onboard SATA driver, but OS its not only drivers.

Of course maybe someone can do thinks faster, even if there is more developers, and tons of money, but we all know the situation .. Anyway, why you even bother ? You are not os4 user, and as i understand from your posts, you even not in interest to be aos4 user, so for what all of this ?:)

i am by no means trying to question the value of efforts of (freelance) developers that contribute to os4 like hans or you, kas1e. also the deals involved are not of my concern. i am looking at the whole issue from the point of view of a potential customer. the product in question is quite pricey. a customer could get over with and buy if enough seriousity, honesty or lets call it transparency was involved. but if i have to deal with a black box situation, or even if there is a continous record of misleading information i stand back from such an offer. simple as that. i am an amiga enthusiast, but im not going to sacrifice myself for its fate.

@nutters

what the hell is wrong with some of you people?! who on earth would care if it was hyperion who mastered the CD or acube? what bleedin' difference does it make? didn't acube always master the CDs? aren't they the distributor?

some of you need psychological help. seriously. arguing with the board developers over a product they designed themselves? like you would know better about a product you didn't design? unbelievable.

the product was delayed. it happens. in fact, every hardware project associated with the post-commodore amiga has been delayed. that's life. not happy about the state of the OS? neither am i.... so i'll wait until it's bloody finished! the version of OS4.1 that came with the first SAMs was in a 'beta' state as well. works great now that it's finished; i have no doubt the SAM460ex will be the same.

and of course it's expensive. this is an exotic platform. it's going to be expensive. we can't spend years and years getting angry over the same issues, can we? acube has created a product that fills a void in the amiga product space. i'm glad they did, and everyone involved should be proud of the work done thus far. let me just reiterate my earlier post in closing: congrats to acube and all involved in getting this board to market!

Well, a wise (if somewhat biased) man once said:
Quote:

Any arrangement whereby both hardware and software come from the same source is unworkable because other hardware vendors will not receive the same software support as [the source in question] and are hence placed at a disadvantage.

So given that the Managing Partner of Hyperion now happens to also be a partner in one of only two remaining hardware vendors for OS4-targetted hardware, I am intensely curious whether this almost-decade-old prediction has come to pass. Especially as another, less known but probably even more wise man once told me something along the lines of "Watch out for what people worry about other people could do to them; For it shows their way of thinking, so the odds are good that, given the chance, they will do those exact same things to you"....

@umisef

so your concern is that acube could potentially be at a disadvantage with regard to support from the OS4 development team in favor of A-EON, and that by reading the tea leaves of the creation of the OS4 build included with the new SAM, you can see the beginnings of such a scenario?

with respect -- that seems a bit of a stretch.

acube, hyperion, and A-EON are companies. they will protect their own interests. it is not up to us to second guess their ability to do so. if acube isn't complaining -- and given that one of their principals have been arguing with you here -- it isn't any of your business what goes on behind the scenes. it's their business, not ours.

personally this reeks of some twisted vendetta against hyperion and an attempt to score points against them through innuendo and arguing over processes that you have no direct knowledge of or influence in.

i know your history in this community. you're a very positive contributor. you're better than this kind of nonsense. if you have an accusation to make, then make it, and provide compelling evidence. and if you plan to do so, please do so in another thread, not the one where acube is announcing a new product; it's insulting to everyone who made the board possible. i know that's not your intent, but that is the result.

Really? I mean, really? You know anyone form CUSA camp could say something like that about you, just because they are somehow ofended by discussion of uncomfortable topic?

Umisef's track record of debunking "Hardware Vendors" claims is so good I will stop and consider what he has to say even if producers of the board says otherwise.

So you are no longer partner in A-Eon? Or no longer managing partner of Hyperion?

There is a clear conflict of interest because members of the [operating system] team have a financial stake in a competing hardware producer.

The only way to get around that problem is a strict contract [with AI] and a separate legal entity.

@wawa: The version of AmigaOS 4.x currently shipping with SAM 460 boards and systems was produced by the AmigaOS development team (including Hyperion's two full time developers) and assembled by someone from A-Cube who is also a longstanding betatester of AmigaOS 4.

As with all previous versions of AmigaOS 4.x, the final product was tested by the AmigaOS 4.x betatesters, approved by Hyperion for distribution and CD's were duplicated and manuals printed by third party companies.

The process was no different from the way in which the CD's for the SAM440 were handled.

@umisef: Do your own research. I wonder at which point the fact that you are consistently wrong starts to sink in.

We know you don't like Hyperion, PPC hardware, AmigaOS 4 etc. etc.

Just come out and say it (or better yet: make better use of your time) instead of coming up with veiled accusations and innuendo backed up by zero research and which is (as a rule) are devoid of any reality.

You're absolutely right! AmigaOS 4.1 is not "produced" by third party companies... Sorry for the wrong information!

Let all the polemics out, and let's cheer for another sign of Amiga vitality (which in general should make everyone happy regardless of camp).

Big kudos to everyone involved, and keep up your good work!
