software OS4   software OS4 : Sam440ep_setup 1.3 released
   posted by m3x on 7-Feb-2012 0:04:43 (6247 reads)
Sam440ep_setup is a little utility to optimize performance on your Sam440ep board (mini-itx and flex versions)

What's new:

use a more aggressive instruction cache speculative prefetching setting.
This allows a faster execution for some software, for example the following
Blender speed test increased performance by 10%-20%:

bldyn -b projects/bricks_and_water_plugin.blend -o ram:pool -F JPEG -f 0

As a sidenote some values returned by Ragemem are incorrect (MIPS) or lower
(L2 cache read64/write64) when this setting is enabled.
To disable this setting, add NOCCR argument to the command line.

Many thanks m3x! Will try it later on. I am happy to see that performance possibilities of the Sam line are being exploited by the manufacturing company ;)

On a side note, I have a request; Is it possible to make a utility that will have 4-5 per-configured options for speeding up the boot process on the SamEp? Is it possible such kind of thing?

Thanks for your time, once again! :)

I get this:

Blender before:

Saved: ram: pool0001.jpg Time: 01:11.95

After:

Saved: ram: pool0001.jpg Time: 00:59.03

Well done! Keep optimising!

@m3x
Thanks for the update.

Firstly can I run this on my board as it is one of the sam440ep-mini-itx boards that does not work with the latest released BIOS with the latest?

Any progress on a BIOS a stable BIOS update for the effected sam440ep mini-itx boards can't run the last BIOS? When I previously reported the issue I thing you said the issues was a result of the memory supplied with the boards being incompatible with the new memory timings being used.

I see a 14% spped up on the blender render.

It may work on your board as well, and in case you see any stability issue, just add the NOCCR argument to disable this new setting.
Currently I don't have too much free time to work on a new U-Boot version, maybe later this year...

@m3x

New HW in the pipeline?
Anything for the FPGA/expansion connector?

Is it possible to get SAM440ep-mini updated to 1GB RAM? (any way???)

Congrats.

Very cool. DosBox games are really nice to play now....but i had some freeze here and there.

And a strange bug... if i move a window, the screen goes blank for a while, to re-appear 2 seconds later

I had a similar idea:) But for more advanced user.
A tool that will allow to:
- alter voltage (lets limit it to +/- 10%)
- to change multipliers
- to affect FSB etc.
- to set user values for memoty acces latencies etc:)

And of course all to be done *only* via AmigaOS enviroment (to be sure that restart will bring standard values)

For example - I'm wondering how much are we able to push memory controler beyond the default clock frequency with good RAM installed and proper multipliers.
Is shoudn't bring any harm ;)

I have been told (and please correct me if I am wrong, perhaps I misunderstood), that kickstart loads all sorts of modules (e.g. drivers for the VooDoo 3), even though components may not be included on system's actual configuration. Assuming this is correct, would it be possible to remove any of those by making a custom version for your computers (let's start with the SamEp that has standard components and a limited expandability to take care)? Or it wouldn't had any serious effect on the boot speed?

I have removed using the ;

all the stuff that I don't have and it now boots in 15.3 secs, see video:

Mechanic knows more about it...

Hm - you can do this already by editing your kick layout file...

@cha05e90

Yeah I know, but I am not comfortable of doing it. I am afraid I might #### things up. That's why, I suggested for m3x who knows the system inside out to make a custom kick layout file for the standard SamEp, if that is possible of course :)
