   posted by broadblues on 10-Mar-2012 20:03:39 (3234 reads)
Well I'm very pleased to announce the third update to SketchBlock.

SketchBlock 1.3

New features include support for bitmap brushes, more ARexx commands, brush selection via the GUI, and support for ToolBox windows so that the main sketch window remains active whilst changing settings and much much more ..

Read more...

Download here

And while you wait for it to be moved from the upload queue take a look at this informal tutorial on bitmaps brushes and how to create them.

Can't belive that someone skilled go that hard route called "make a normal paint app for os4". Brave ones deserve good donations and i will do soon more for sure.

Andy, if you will not give up on it, i am sure it will small replacement of photoshop in his early days :)

Quick feedback as I just downloaded it to try it out.

1) It asks for the device Sketchblock: on loading so I just assigned it to the drawer I downloaded. Read the documentation afterwards that told me this, however an Installer would be useful to do trivial stuff.

2) The Sketch Tools and Layers sub-windows are set to Always on Top which is kinda annoying if you have other stuff open.

3) Finally, these same two windows can never be set to 'Active' when clicking on GUI elements of the window; however this is more of an observation than a genuine problem - I assumes its a way to ensure focus always remain on the artwork window. Just seems odd the first time you observe it.

Anyway... looks good so far and as kas1e says... a bold challenge.

I'll write an installer later on when the design is more stabilised, other wise it'll just be amoving target.

Yes but press tab an the go away, press again to reopen. Probably make it an option at some point.

They use the new ToolBox attribute, it ,as you say, allows to to modify tools settings without changing the focus from th sketch window. It was afeature request Might make it an option

I presume that was the last layer you removed? If so found and fixed. Thatnks for the report.

@Petrol

Ah that's what gone wrong. Whoever updated the archive on os4depot.net forgot to rename the archive before publishing it.

How did you work that out?

Is there a way to get the new Timberwolf to play your video?

I do not own anything but Amiga computers.

@broadblues

Great work! SketchBlock is fast, fluid and very stable here on my Sam-flex.

We need more native development like this!

Looking forward to future updates.

@all
Thanks for the postive comments.

I'm quite pleased with the speed of it on my SAM, it's faster than GIMP on my linuxbox. On GIMP the largest image I can comfortably work on is about 1600 pixels square, on SketchBlock this afternoon I painted a 3000 x 2500 painting, with two layers. That's a result as far as I'm concerned.

My design goals will be to maintain that as I add features.

BTW in the Rexx drawer you find a benchbitmap.rexx script that give an idea of how fast it;s running on your system.

For example:

On my SAM Flex 733 I get.

9.Programing:Projects/SketchBlock/SketchBlock/distribution> rx Rexx/benchbitmap.rexx
Circles 4425.32268 Pixels/ sec

If I choose the 'Circles' brush and start the script.

Anything over 2000 is acceptable IMHO.

The value is a guide to the speed at which you can move the brush and have it keep up with you.

@ broadblues

Excellent program, it feels great sketchin` and now I am considering a tablet (never thought about it, but this program really inspires!).
Which one would be compatible with OS4? Pressure/angle etc are supported in OS4?

{edit}
#1
It was actually answered before.
What about the Wacom tablets? The features I mentioned above? Has anybody tried them?

#2
A strange output window message pops up
"Button Loading failed 5E16EB78 5EF11E18 5FFFF800"
{/edit}
