software OS4   software OS4 : RunInUAE r7-b released (this is a "quick fix")
posted by ChrisH on 1-Sep-2012 9:12:51 (1800 reads)

RunInUAE is the easiest & most fool-proof way to run Classic (68k) Amiga games & demos on AmigaOS4 (and comes with OS4 since Update 4).

This is a small "quick fix" release of RunInUAE:
* Fixed WHLoad games not working when they use "kick34005.A500". AmigaOS4.1 Update 5 must have been installed first.

You can download it from here:

Details of the changes:
* Fixed WHLoad games not working when they use "kick34005.A500". AmigaOS4.1 Update 5 must have been installed first.

What is RunInUAE?
RunInUAE is intended to make it incredibly easy to run old Amiga games on AmigaOS4, and it comes with an easy installer, so that you can:

* Run almost any HD installed 68k game (or program) inside E-UAE, by simply double-clicking on it! Including WHDLoad & JOTD JST installed games.
* Run ADF & DMS games by double-clicking them. (Needs a little bit of manual set-up if you don't have at least AmigaOS4.1 Update 4.) Otherwise just drag & drop them onto RunInUAE's icon in AmiDock or it's AppIcon.
* Run CD32 & CDTV games from real or virtual CDs. (Compatibility is not great.)
* The installer can set-up E-UAE with full-speed Sam-optimised settings. But it can also use your existing E-UAE settings if you want.
* The installer will get the necessary Kickstart ROMs from AmigaOS4.1 Update 4 (if you are using it), or otherwise it can copy them off an Amiga Forever CD.
* You do *not* need to set-up any assignments, nor create or edit any cryptic scripts or config files, for it to work! (Unlike alternative solutions.)
* You do not need RunInUAE running in the background, *unless* you want to play HD installed 68k games that do *not* use WHDLoad.

It *might* be possible, but it would not be easy, and at the end of it you would have an untested screenmode that may or may not work on your monitor.

I would much rather RunInUAE adds a 320x256/etc screenmode using the official OS way, as then (in theory!) you won't get that screenmode if your monitor doesn't support it.

The "ultimate" fix would be to get rid of the need for a 320x256 screenmode at all, and modify E-UAE to use OS4.1's Compositing to scale 320x256 up to 640x480 (or whatever). As that would be done by the graphics card it should be very fast, even on a Sam440. But this requires someone to improve our E-UAE...
