software OS4   software OS4 : AmiSystemRestore r1 beta4 released
   posted by ChrisH on 20-Sep-2012 19:09:03 (2458 reads)
This is the fourth public beta of AmiSystemRestore:

* Got rid of some common but mostly-harmless issues that were being reported in the debug log. Many thanks to those who reported them to me!
* AISS is no-longer required.
* The installer now handles problems better.
* The main window now resizes when you change the "Show size of restore point" preference.
* Improved the info reported in the debug log.

Downloading it:
This is a public beta of AmiSystemRestore. Although I and a small number of testers have not noticed any stability problems in over 6 months of use, there is still a small possibility of crashes or lock-ups with untested programs or situations, due to the complexity of the OS patching done by AmiSystemRestore. Please report all problems to me.

You can download it from OS4Depot.net.

Details of the changes:
* NEW: Got rid of the mostly-harmless "getCurrentRestorePoint_handle()" debug log entries, thanks to feedback from a few people.
* NEW: The window now resizes itself when the "Show size of restore point" preferences is changed.
* NEW: AISS is no-longer required for the toolbar to have images (and the installer correctly handles AISS not being available). Thanks to bug report by Tony Wyatt.
* CHG: Changed how some stuff writes to the debug log; provides more info, and won't fail to be written when two things try to write to it simultaneously.
* CHG: The installer now better handles installation problems.

What is AmiSystemRestore?
AmiSystemRestore aims to give AmigaOS4 a similar ability to Window's very useful System Restore. What it does is create Restore Points, which act as snapshots of your SYS: partition (where the OS is stored). If anything changes on your SYS: partition, then you can roll it back to the time of the snapshot.

Why would you want to undo changes to your SYS: partition? Well, if you install a new program (or update an existing one), you have no idea if any new libraries (or other changes) will have problems that may break existing programs. A badly written installer might even replace libraries (etc) with older versions!

AmiSystemRestore allows you to undo all recent changes (whether or not they were done by the installer), and return SYS: to an earlier point in time. Knowledgable users can be more selective about which changes are undone, with the warning that they need to know what they are doing!

If you are installing something using AmiUpdate or the official Installer system, then AmiSystemRestore will automatically create Restore Points for you (and Ringhio messages should notify you of this).

@djrikki, tommysammy
It is nice to hear people suggest that it should be included with the OS (as a Contribution)... but it is IMHO far too early for that. I think it needs to come out of beta & be widely used for perhaps a year, before forming an opinion on whether it is really suitable for inclusion with the OS: Even if it works exactly as advertised, there is the question of how many people will use it, and whether it is something that most Amiga users will really find useful.

Not to mention that there are lots of other cool programs out there that IMHO are at least as deserving of being included with the OS. e.g. the Granite firewall (you can never be too paranoid!).
