software OS4   software OS4 : Hyperion Releases AmigaOS 4.1 Update 6
posted by eliyahu on 30-Nov-2012 14:10:11 (18275 reads)
UPDATE 6 is back on the Hyperion web site ready for download for registered users.

As mentioned over at IntuitionBase this morning, Hyperion has released AmigaOS 4.1 Update 6.

While a couple of bug fixes are included for the AmigaOne X1000, this small update marks the end of an era: as promised by team lead Steven Solie at AmiWest 2012, we'll be able to enjoy OS component updates as they are ready via AmiUpdate. So, for example, one component update need not wait on another to be ready to available for customers. From the included AmigaGuide file:

Quote:
Future AmigaOS updates will be delivered using AmiUpdate. A new update server has been setup at update.amigaos.net to deliver these updates.

A new Workbench menu item named "Update software..." has been added to conveniently launch AmiUpdate.

Only registered users will be able to download updates. To register your AmigaOS serial number go to www.hyperion-entertainment.biz. During the registration process a user name and password will be created. You will be prompted for your user name and password the first time you try to access the update.amigaos.net server with AmiUpdate.

An additional preferences program named "Updates" is provided to control how updates are delivered. For example, the location of the RollBack directory and scheduling of automatic updates can both be configured.

Head on over to the Hyperion web site and pick up your copy today!

Thank You. I sure this will be sorted soon. I too installed the update before reading it was premature. So far it hasn't caused any problems for me.

Just wait until your screen turns blue and a large butterfly appears on your desktop.

Since the update has been withdrawn, maybe it would be worth considering changing the AmiUpdate addition. The autoupdate option and WorkBench menu addition seem to run contrary to the general Amiga recomendation to always back up your system partition before installing an update. I like the idea of having quicker access to updated OS4 components with AmiUpdate but think it should be a manual function with no automatic option and no easily clicked menu item. Of course, that's just my personal opinion and others might not agree.

When you select the menu item (Workbench|), AmiUpdate checks what is available. You have to actually request the update from the program to proceed. I didn't see an option to bypass that so it looks just fine.

No it doesn't, its always recommended that ppl make backups. This update has been in the works for months & AmiUpdate will be part of OS4 with ud 6, that won't change.

The problem with "package" updates is long waits for bug fixes & ppl not knowing the status of their system when the next update arrives. AmiUpdate will know what files should be updated for each different system without the used needing to worry about what they have already.

And you have always the rollback to get your previous software versions back at any time.

The Updates prefs program gives you lots of control over what is being done automatically. I'm the kind of guy who wants full control, so I have set AmiUpdate to:

- not run automatically
- not install updates automatically
- save unpacked updates in separate, named subdirectories

So in effect all it does for me is give me easy overview over what is ready for download, and fetch it for me, ready for my own manual installation.

You can also opt to not use the CopyStore/RollBack feature.

So I guess most tastes are catered for.

Best regards,

Niels

Nice to see AmiUpdate being used for OS updates, even better that it means we will get incremental updates/bug fixes sooner!

Question, does AmiUpdate store the username/password for updates.amigos.net?

@ChrisH

Thanks, didn't seem to do this first time as I was asked to enter again after a reboot.

Discovered I still had a pre-update 6 AmiUpdate installed, hopefully now I've deleted the older version the new one will remember.

EDIT:
Never mind, I was being stupid and using "update" from the "Window" menue, instead of "update software" from the "Workbench" menu. D'oh!

I seem to be alone in having a spot of trouble. The Workbench Menue method of starting AmiUpdate doesn't do anything obvious. There is a very brief flicker across the WB screen, but nothing opens, not even an appicon. This is independent of the preferences settings. However, Clicking on AmiUpdate in the Workbench:System/AmiUpdate directory does start the program.

AmiUpdate then successfully loads updates from AmigaOS update source, however, it finds many updates available ihn the AmigaOS 4.1 SDK source and fails to download any of them. It appears to time out on each one.

Do I have something set wrong in my system that prevents the menu from working, and if so, what? Do I have an incorrect address for trhe SDK? What I have is www.amiupdate.net/SdkServer.

Thanks!
