software OS4   software OS4 : Amidock GMail Notifier
   posted by spotUP on 16-Aug-2013 22:48:22 (3474 reads)
Qt-GmailNotifier released for AmigaOS4.

This is one of my more news worthy ports. Common on other platforms, but yet not seen on AOS as far as I know.

It lives in your Amidock and let's you know when you've got new mail.

Anyone who downloads this evidently closed-source piece of software may want to consider the ramifications, and ask themselves just how they know fore sure that the password they give the program isn't also sent to the man or woman behind this port.

@ Petah

How do we know that any pice of software or app isn't sending our information somewhere?

While everyone should be aware of the security implications of running any software, that's a rather nasty suggestion to make from the comfort of your armchair.

@spotup
nice feature!, i use yam with gmail so i am fine.
would be cool if yam got this very same feature instead of the "look for new mail" every minute or whatever.
great work

@petah
yes the developer has over 30 million email login's and passwords now, he only needs a few more now before he can take over the world by claiming his fortune of your emails.

@Toaks

YAM uses POP3 and that's the way it works. IMAP is different though and since GMail supports that I suspect that this port uses that too?

You can try SimpleMail with GMail if you like, it supports IMAP. Works a bit different.

I use YAM too as my main software for e-mails in AOS too since it's nice to have its icon in Amidock and other little things that SimpleMail lacks.

Anyway, thanks for this nice release!

While I appreciate the effort on these qt ports, I'd rather prefer OS4 native apps (which look to have been put aside)...now OS4 depot seems full with these apps... certainly useful but apparently resource hungry...

Just my -0.02

Cheers,

Dragster

Qt is 100% native under OS4, but as any other big project need some time to be finished, that's it

It is a native exe but not using native toolkits... I can see Dragster's point.
Just consider this: this project uses QtCore and QtGui (just like any other Qt project with a minimum usefulness) and additionally also QtNetwork and I guess QtXml. These have been ported to AmigaOS4 as .so. The implementation of the "shared objects" on AmigaOS4 make them "not really so shared": basically each program using them, is linked to them at run time, which means that launching this simple docky, you are using some 30MB of memory. 30 Megs of Ram for a mail notifier... on a system that can address at most 1.8GB overall! But even without the limitation of the reduced address space... 30 MB for a mail notifier: and I thought Amiga was known for not being resource hungry and efficient.
Therefore, Dragster is right: better spend efforts for native software, at least for these kind of programs that could be implemented by single programmers (and this could be valid for Twitter clients, or polish notation calculators and so on as well). Think about it: since .so are linked at runtime at every application, regardless of them being already loaded by a previous one, even just a dozen of simple Qt dockies will put many AmigaOS systems on their knees with respect to RAM...
Qt on AmigaOS makes sense for big projects, that cannot be implemented by the few programmers we have left, but not really for simple programs for which we already have equivalents, or could have if time was not really diverted by these ports. And about the big projects, I still find to see one worth that has been ported...

Kind regards,
Andrea

So i'm more than thrilled with QT port.
