New RadeonHD Driver Release

Cardiff, 15th November 2013

A-EON Technology is pleased to announce that Version 1.0 RC2 (0.57) of the RadeonHD driver for AmigaOS 4.1 is now available for free download for AmigaONE X1000 and other registered customers.

Registered customers: http://www.a-eon.com/?page=download&os=amigaos
New customers: http://www.a-eon.com/?page=radeonhd

Click READ MORE for additional details:

The new Version 1.0 RC2 (Release candidate) adds a few new features and bug fixes which improves card initialisation and solves intermittent boot problems which affected some Sapphire RadeonHD 6570 cards. The fixes and improvements include:-

Golden register initialisation code added (golden registers are a table of registers supplied by AMD's hardware engineers to be initialised on startup)

Improved the VGA (UBOOT/CFE screen) shutdown code for Evergreen+ chipsets. This solves the intermittent boot problems which affected some Sapphire Radeon HD 6570 cards. (and possibly others)

About the RadeonHD driver: The driver supports 2D and Compositing under AmigaOS 4.1 with a wide range of RadeonHD graphics cards including: the X1300-X1950 series, HD4000 series, "Evergreen" HD5000 series, "Northern Islands" HD6000 series and "Southern Island" HD7000 series RadeonHD cards. The RadeonHD driver development was commissioned by A-EON Technology for its ground breaking AmigaONE X1000 computer.

Please visit AmigaKit's website to obtain compatible RadeonHD graphics cards: www.amigakit.com

About the developer: Hans de Ruiter is an electrical & electronic engineer and leading AmigaOS developer and Amiga enthusiast. His website - HDRLab - details various projects, many of which are AmigaOS related. The biggest of these is the RadeonHD driver for AmigaOS, an ambitious project that aims to deliver modern graphics capabilities for the AmigaOS platform.

Thanks, but it seems that the Version-String isn't updated, it shows still "0.57 (20.06.2013)". Or the RadeonHD.chip on the A-EON-Server isn't updated?

I read "Version 1.0 RC2 (0.57)" in this news item - so it seems to be correct, indeed.

@thread

This is a positive step but I have to take issue with the hyperbole in the statement that the X1000 is a ground breaking computer. What ground would that be? Did someone drop it and leave a divot in the ground?

For goodness sakes, it performs on par with a Pentium class system from 2004 and now has 2D compositing, a feature that many systems have been capable of for over 20 years. Excuse me for not getting excited.

@ferrels

Everything is relative i guess.

Groundbreaking for Amiga OS4 maybe?

Either way i think you should ask to get your glass topped off.

Thank you for info. Another disappointment :(

I am intending to go and visit Vox here in Belgrade and check out how looks & works his X1000 machine for what he paid over 3600€ [which is an average month salary in Denmark or 10 average month salaries here in Serbia] planning to do some Youtube video promotions but he said still nothing can`t be recorded as even his X1000 can`t play Youtube videos at full speed because lack of drivers. Funny thing is that Linux he has installed on it works pretty fast and without any Youtube problems...

I hope one day we will be able to use our Amigas just to play Youtube videos...

@djnick

Disappointment for what ?
We already know that 3D support was never considered as a part of that Hans's drivers, 3D will arrive with Mesa/Gallium or the newest Warp3D, both of them will be released with AmigaOS 4.2

About YouTube you can already use MUI OWB or even better SMTube+MPlayer

@djnick

If Warp3D drivers for RadeonHD or when Gallium is available there will a big noise made about it and you won't have to search the fine details of the press release.

Though Texas is a big state, I'm in Austin, kind of central, so I offer Steve a drink of his favorite on me. AND.. I do have a functioning AmigaOne(XE) that I can let him have which is now surplus to me since I plunked down for a AmigaOneX1000 and am quite happy with it.

I'd deliver it personally next time I'm out his way... where ever in Texas that is.

Shipping the thing is expensive, but dropping it off on a visit? Sure!

And how many more years for that?? It is a feature that should have been available when the systems were originally released.
And even though you can use OWB somewhat with youtube I highly doubt that HD videos are anywhere near watchable.

@djnick

It is good news that Hans has continued to work on the X1000 driver. I believe that 3D support will come with the Gallium update in 4.2.

I understand the disappointment that 3D still doesn't work in the supplied X1000 gfx card and perhaps in hindsight it would have been better to have supplied one of the older Radeons that do have mini GL support. I don't think anyone on the OS4 X1000 team thought it would take this long. I suppose this is why they added the dual gfx card setup firmware changes that you can get from the AEon site.

The X1000 is still ground breaking in terms of what it does with OS4 although it is not ground breaking enough for most people considering the price.

Linux will of course work fine because they have such a massive wealth of developers working on the platform whereas I am constantly amazed as to what the tiny OS 4 and AEon teams have managed to do.

I have had my X1000 for what must be two years now and it is a difficult machine to justify considering the price which I have no doubt is the lowest they could make it. The lack of a big enough market is the problem with not enough customers/developers and economies of scale to bring prices down. Yet here we are over two years later and three X1000 production runs complete with Cyrus to come. Some people may still not be particularly impressed with that but to me that is genuine progress in what is a tough marketplace.

For myself - and I admit this is entirely personal and subjective - when I am using the X1000 and just simply enjoying using a really fast Amiga again it is worth it. It's just a lovely place to be - all the positive memories from the past now on super fast hardware and a quite wonderful OS. A glimpse of what might have been and still could be. Not all of the components are there yet as we know but I like what is being built and if there is some chance that it can go further then I will continue to support it.

The X1000 is what it is - a high quality board at a high price for those that are really, really enthusiastic about supporting OS4 and AEon. For most people right now the AmigaOne 500 is the machine to have. The 500 is the Porsche Boxster to the X1000's 911. For most it will be more than enough for now.

He's disappointed that it's 2013 and there is yet no decent 3D support in OS4. Can't say I blame him in light of what he had to pay for his hardware and his OS.

@ferrels

If im not mistaken, djnick got a AOS4 machine given to him as a token for his work past and present.

Free machine or not, its obvious for everyone that DJnick loves Amiga OS4, so hes entitled to his opinion (i happen to be somewhat of a DJnick fanboy/love his music and wallpaper designs)
But whoever follows the Hardware/software development on different forums shouldnt be extremely suprised that 3d support is slow to emerge.

A-Eon got flogged on forums about the x1000 being vaporware, but it still emerged (whatever you might think of the endproduct).

As a very early adopter of the SAM 460ex I feel djnicks pain - been waiting for 2+ years now (possibly 3)!

I was expecting Gallium in 2012 (given the AROS port took a year by 1 person I read somewhere) and now its nearly the end of 2014. You can only hear "when it's done" so many times. Please Father Christmas be good to us this year.
