software OS4   software OS4 : New RadeonHD driver for all Sam460 users
posted by elwood on 7-Nov-2014 8:22:47 (4006 reads)
Dear Amigans,

With the new Sam460cr just released by ACube Systems it was logical to team again with A-EON Technology to offer Amigans the best experience with their new product.
The new RadeonHD driver now supports many different Radeon graphic cards. It was then obvious a new version was needed to give maximum flexibility while installing AmigaOS.

Thanks to this agreement between A-EON and ACube Systems, Sam460 and AmigaOne500 will be released with a special version of the driver called RadeonHD Lite.
This is a limited version of the RadeonHD driver that is more than enough to install AmigaOS 4.1 and start to use it. As it will NOT have compositing support and will be limited to a maximum resolution of 1024x768 any Amigan wanting to do more serious work will want to upgrade to the latest version released by A-EON.

RadeonHD driver available on Amistore: http://www.amistore.net/

It's a nice gesture if nothing else who wants to be restricted to that sort of screen resolution?

I'm strongly convinced that the screen-size restriction will not "offer Amigans the best experience with their new product". In fact, this is very likely to cause major headache to anyone not well informed about this (annoying and unnecessary) detail, because simply everyone will ask themselves, why the ****hell they can't get their screen to operate properly... Very much like the decades-long X11-configuration hassle on Linux. I would say that this restriction should be dropped and instead one could easily limit the 3D capabilities and/or simply limit the frame rates for those who really need 3D for their games.

+1
But "3D capabilites"? Did I miss something?

@Daytona675x & @_PAB_

I suppose you don't understand the reason behind this compromise

This lite driver is supplied for emergency boot and install process. If you want the full unrestricted driver, you should get it from A-EON: www.a-eon.com/radeonhd

Hi guys! I am happy to see this progress well :) But going to AEON site I see this:

"Radeon HD Driver

Driver specifications:
Support for "R520" (X1300-X1950 series)
Support for "R700" (HD4000 series)
Support for "Evergreen" (HD5000 series)
Support for "Northern Islands" (HD6000 series)
Support for "Southern Islands" (HD7000 series)
2D Driver with compositing

Driver requirements:
RadeonHD PCI Express Graphics Card
AmigaOS 4.1 or greater
AmigaOne X1000 with latest firmware
AmigaOne 500 (SAM 460ex)
SAM 440ep with PCI to PCI-E adapter

Where to buy compatible graphics cards:
www.amigakit.com"

Still 2D? No 3D support yet? Or I miss something? What about us who already bought this driver last year [I think it was ~35 euros, paid via PayPal].

As I don`t follow much, my question would be:

will with this unrestricted driver I will be able to play Youtube vids on Sam460ex at normal speed? What about HD videos / movies played via SSD disk [in case default HD is slow]? Will HD vids be played at full speed too?

Thanks in advance! :) And great to see you guys work!

The web browser will need to be updated to support the composited video feature.

The speed of your hard disk won't be a bottleneck. HD video does playback at full speed but I don't know if that is the case for all codecs available. Decoding is still handled by the CPU. Comosited Video just speeds up the manipulation and display of the YUV data which frees up more CPU time for video decoding.

Info I've seen so far says that certain HD 1080p file display at full speed with 50% free CPU time so it sounds promising but until it is out in the wild it is unknown if this is the case for the most CPU intensive codecs.

@djnick

This news release relates to the Picasso96 2D driver, which is different to the Warp3D driver.

The difference in speed will depend on the codec, while you can play some 1080p movies, there are 720p movies you can't play, on the AmigaONE-X1000.

This is way I wrote that we are "going 1080p", I did not write that "1080p is fully supported". On my blog.

http://lifeofliveforit.blogspot.no/2014/10/mplayer-is-going-full-hd-1080p.html

What Hans as been saying has been bit more optimistic then me, but he knows maybe more then I know about what Hyperion is doing, besides there might be OS component I have not, that they have. As I was only given access to files needed to complete this project for AmigaONE-X1000.

I think that this is more a "do you see the glass half full or half empty" thing.

What I know has nothing to do with Hyperion, but relates to the H.264 codec. It's a gross oversimplification to say that no 1080p H.264 videos will play properly, because that's highly dependent on the profile and settings used when the video was encoded. We'll have to wait and see how many videos are encoded with which settings.

I have pointed out that not all videos will play at full speed (multiple times). At the same time, it is important for people to recognize the significant performance improvements that we have achieved. I honestly never thought that I'd be able to play any 1080p video with only 50% CPU usage on a single-core AmigaOS machine. We've gone from not being able to play this particular video at full speed, to being able to play it with 50% CPU usage (or less). This exceeded my expectations, and I think that it's worth celebrating the improvement rather than always focusing on the negative.

The videos I record with the EZCAP HDMI capture box, are h.264 mp4's and play at about 31 frames per sec on my X1000 (no sound not sure how much loss sound would make), sometimes faster, depends on the content.

No one is saying that.

Yes I agree, its more about what words that are used, just don't wont give the impression that every all 1080p films will play, because then people will be disappointed.

With out doubt I think we should be proved of what we have done.

Yes that is amazing.

I know MorphOS was able to play 1080p videos on a G5 2Ghz using overlay, and I know the PA5T was in the same lege as the G5, so I know it was possible, I did not have any expectations about CPU usage.

Whit out doubt do I celebrate what we have done at any time, I know what did take to get there (from you, me and other contributes), I just wont to give a realistic expectations.

Actually, at least one person has made this claim. Otherwise, I wouldn't have posted the "50% CPU usage with a 1080p" result that Rob mentioned above.

So do I, and I stand by everything that I have said on the matter.

Thanks for proving my point with actual data.

I remember that at one time, none of my friends were able to play divx videos properly on their pcs while my A4000T could play them without skipping any frames using ForggerNG audio being decoded by Delfina Lite and video being read from CyberstormPPC scsi. :)

It's good to see Amiga is at least catching up.

I see, anyway we have not tested this on Sam460, so lets wait and see.

Have you tried running ForggerNG on AmigaOS4, it work pretty well.
