Thanks for your work Hans, great!

@klapdeur

I allso have a 6000 series, I have no problem buying an 7000 series but 5000 series seems slower and I also want a passively single slot card as I know own.

My R9 280 developed a fault last week and is being collected for RAM later so I'll have to wait a little longer to check these out.

Congrats to users of supported hardware, and the drivers author.
Bit by bit it all adds up.

No. I'm sorry but it's not.

31 fps (meaning half the normal scan-rate of an ordinary monitor) at a really ancient resolution (1280x1024), in a simple 15 year old game, using Radeon HD 7xxx cards is anything but good.

THIS is what you would expect from using H/W like HD7xxx:

https://youtu.be/ZwWLns7-xN8

Yes, that was not a pre-render but actual real-time rendered graphics by the game engine, in full HD resolution or higher. THIS is "Radeon 7xxx" performance. THIS would have been "really good!"

Instead you buy a €1000 SAM system, that never came with Radeon 7xxx cards, so you will have to buy a new costly GFX card and replace the one you got with the system, then you buy the Drivers separately, then you buy the 3D separately to use with the drivers, only to end up with a performance in ancient games that a crippled Efika with 9800 GFX eats for breakfast, even using screen resolutions that's way below the native resolution for any modern or even semi-modern monitor.

There is a lot you could say about this.

But "really good" isn't really it...

@TRIPOS

We all now the underlying Warp3D API is hopelessly out of date since no new features have been added since the Voodoo 3 era, it doesn't even support hardware T&L.

To get any real performance gains Warp3D needs to be updated or replaced but getting 20% performance gain from the driver itself is a decent gain even if the overall result is poor because of other factors.

>THIS is what you would expect from using H/W like HD7xxx:
....

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT!

Instead of you being full of negativity towards every positive development in AOS area...

It would be constructive to post results of compareable HW and SW.
Like HD7xxx in a 1,8Ghz singlecore x86 computer running same application.

That would give some info of how good or bad the matter on topic is.

For this result:
https://youtu.be/ZwWLns7-xN8

1) We need the SW/game in use.
2) We need 3D drivers with the needed features
3) We might need faster CPU

So far, we are not there. We might never be. But we see progress. IMO, that's "really good!"

+++++
Sanity behind it all:

For many Amiga fans, it's interesting to see results of what is the fastest or fast enough HW to run the Amiga SW that we already have.

For some Amiga developers it's usefull to see what kind of power we so far have to utilize for next SW project they plan to do.
+++++
A few years ago it looked like the mainstream 3D HW is not within reach. Now we are able to use the modern GPU HW on Amiga OS devices, mainly thanks to A-eon & ACube, secondarily because of driver developers (SW work is bigger than the HW work, but chicken & egg ...), etc...
+++++
In gaming HW capability, not long ago we were hoping to get to PS2/xbox1 level. Now our HW is on PS3/xbox360 level or better.
We just need more SW (and the more affordable low end HW).

Firstly, I don't think that's using the same higher level 3D API we have (OpenGL). Secondly, as already pointed out, Warp3D is probably a rather major bottleneck, and the point of this project isn't to get rid of that, but make "something usable" while (still) waiting for the proper drivers.

Also, be it drivers, available games etc. it's always a bit unfair to compare us against big closed-source companies. Comparing against f.ex. linux is already much less unfair. Rest assured, we're still way behind.

20% speed boost definitely isn't groundbreaking, I'd assume it's some specific operations that have become (say) 100% faster, which results in lower average speed boost.

Most importantly, this proves that "The New Guy" has gotten at least somewhat familiar with the code, and can already do bigger changes.

Warp3D is a dead end - Hyperion have said as much, but it's better than nothing while we wait on (the possibility of) Gallium3D.

Speed boost on X1000 is even more noticeable: from 52 to 74 FPS (40 %). For Quake 3 era games, this is more than enough (well, you can´t use Warp3D for anything newer ).

I saw DDNI's benchmarks over at Amigans.net and the Cow3D demo is boosted by around 80%. It'll be interesting to see what the X5000 achieves with the new driver.

Since Steve Solie last made a statement on Warp3D A-EON became co-owners of Warp3D with a view to further developing it.

Yes, that was great improvement. However, "real" application benchmarks like Quake3 are far more important for common users.

Something like that. Profiling that I did says that vertex throughput has been roughly doubled on the Sam460ex, while the increase is closer to 4x on the A1-X1000.** Other optimizations were also made to reduce driver overhead. However, when the CPU is spending a lot of time doing other stuff (like MiniGL & game logic), then the increases are much more modest.

Hans

** NOTE: These figures exclude other overhead.
