News   News : Haage & Partner seeks developers for AmigaOS4 software support
   posted by MikeB on 22-Aug-2003 11:48:05 (5300 reads)
German Amiga portal Amiga-news.de reports on an email sent by Jürgen Haage in which he seeks developers to port ArtEffect and StormC to AmigaOS4. Furthermore H&P will stop the sale of some of H&P's Amiga products. H&P's best sellers PageStream, StormC, ArtEffect and AmigaWriter will not be effected.

The question is, will they get exclusive rights to the compilers modified by the Friedens (essentially making gcc-amigaos4 payware), or will they just be content to provide a good programmers' editor and a GUI for GDB?

gcc is GPL'ed, you can't make this an exclusive deal. Even the 'old' (current) gcc is available as patches to the baseline gcc.

I wouldn't agree to such a ruling anyway. There will be a few compiler system based on GCC for all interested OS 4 developers. What Haage & Partner offer with their StormC system is a GUI/IDE system and whatever they add to this. In the past, that meant automatic library creation and such (although library creation is rather easy with one of our developer tools 'idltool'), their own library and linker etc.

I would love a PPC native version of AmigaWriter. I intend to buy this when I go on my OS 4.0 software shopping spree.

Likewise, use AmigaWriter a lot and a PPC update with some new functionality would be really nice. ArtEffect is a top program too . Hope this news is true.

I agree that the handling of that situation was, how can i say, not the best i have seen. How ever it was sometime ago now, and lets be frank, the Amiga needs as much software as it can get.

H&P may not have been the best in that mess, but lets let bygones be bygones.

I agree, these issues over royalitites with Amiga Inc. were unfortunate, but I kind of have more faith in H&P's ability to deliver products than Amiga Inc. Let's face it (royalty disputes aside) H&P have done a lot to keep the Amiga going through the darker times, with their work on OS3.5, 3.9, Warp OS, OS XL and some decent apps too. I always feel there's a lot of undeserved hostility towards H&P from some quarters (and not nearly enough credit), with people complaining they have a Micro$oft style mentality and the like - I never really got that

As far as I'm concerned H&P ROCK!

Haage and Partner should have stopped the sale of one very important piece of software a long time ago.

Because they didn't, I don't share everyone else's excitement here.

I'm not interested.

@mountain myst

If this is for real, it seems like H&P and Ainc are doing what a lot of people should be doing - putting differences behind them. There is no benefit, in this game, in holding grudges. There are far too many of these already and they are going to hold this community back.

I, for one, am glad to see their return regardless of what errors they have made in the past.

@Rogue:

That's great news, thanks!

I guess I'm just not that trusting of H&P, I was afraid that they'd made Hyperion "an offer they can't refuse" and taken your gcc port for their own use.

Yeah, I know what you're saying, but the pictures in my mind of Bernie beating his head up against the wall for fear of loosing his sanity is a bit too real for me.

All the pain and trouble that was caused in this man's life because of Haage and Partner, is actually too much to forgive.

I reckon I hold things in my mind longer than most, but I feel ok with that.
It seems that people forget quite quickly about certain things as long as it benefits thier own lives.

But as for me, H&P destroyed the trust that I ever had in them.

When a company the size of H&P uses one man's life for thier own financial gain, that's going too far if you ask me.

That's the way I see it.

I will also remember Elbox, and Bill Buck.
