Hardware News   Hardware News : IBM outsources PowerPC production to Samsung

IBM outsources PowerPC production to Samsung

From The Register:

Quote:
The good news is that IBM has outsourced the production to Samsung because its own capacity is insufficient to meet growing demand, the source claims, suggesting better than anticipated sales of the products going forward. Perhaps Nintendo is ordering more GameCube chips.

Or perhaps Eyetech has ordered a load? Well, we can dream can't we?

After reading the news-item I think this is clearly related to the GameCube (as it seems to be G3s... who else is still interested in G3s ? :) ) (Apple is no longer interested in G3, I'd say, and A1's sold I think are mainly G4-based systems...).

The info about Samsung maybe licencing the PowerPC Chip sounds interesting, though... one
more "PowerPC-Company" ? :)

Yeah! No RISC: No fun!

...sorry...

Does IBM support some PPC Linux distributions? What about commercial PPC Unix/AIX?

Just if you have it at the top of your heads.....

I agree with Steffen here Quote:

the more chip makers the merrier but I think these lines are the most interesting:

Quote:

It was also announced this week that IBM has won the contract to design and produce the second-generation Xbox console's main processor.

Seems even microsoft is beginning to see where the future in hardware lies!

There is ofcourse also the possibillity that they're outsourcing the G3 to so that they can focus their own production plants on the G4,G5 and power4.
