Ladies & Germs, we've got some old ones removed & some new ones added

Thank you to all the OS4 development team that have implemented things. Be they from this list or not... It'd be nice to know if any were picked up from this list though

I've tried to summarise the ideas & suggestions up to Post #182. Split into the following categories: Workbench - Elements of Workench itself, 2nd Party Apps - Apps that come installed with OS4 but aren't necessarily part of OS4 itself, 3rd Party Apps - Apps that don't currently come installed with OS4 (I hope I ve got things in the right place) & lastly Bugs so we don't get mixed up between "features requests" & bugs that need clarifying/ironing out (Cheers for that suggestion number6).

The second post here has a load from Wegster too.

Workbench:

[DONE] Auto Assigns: Done as in, C:, LIBS:, S:, etc... are not in the startup sequence. They just happen.

CLI: A native scrolling shell/console (Plus more keyboard function (Alt or Ctrl for whole word stepping).
[DONE] CLI: The ability to drag a filename, URL, directory from a shell listing to extend Drag&Drop functionality.

Copy: If a file already exists, Workbench should run a version query & display the details & differences between the files in question.

Copy & Format progress bar: ETA, Mimimizer (With AppIcon name cycling through info like current file name being copied, % done, ETA), No title bar option, Resizable, Current file/Total files.

DefIcons: These need to be ready set up for each datatype that is stored in DefIcons, the default tool for each will need to be ready to run. MP3's play using a relevant player, all image types to MultiView, video clips & the like sent to an approriate video player.
DefIcons: Unknown types: For unknown datatypes we need a similar function to that of Windows where we get a requester for us to choose a program to use with that particular type of file. Better still, if OS4 could give suggestions based on a standard way that apps can describe the types of files they use & OS4 could just check the list for each app (number6 elaborates here).

@Moly, Working for non programmers But thanks for reading.

[DONE] Directory Structure & Filenames: Merge the Utilities and Tools drawers. Rename "Prefs/Internet" to "Prefs/Network" (Not done, but it's just a name eh).

FFS2: Over 2GB file support. Faster read & write speeds as well as dealing with validating drives like SFS does (i.e. It doesn t ). (More from Helgis here).

[DONE] File Requesters: Amiga-O to select a folder when using browse for folder dialog & the press of the "Esc" key to close the requester.

File Security: It could start with the usual user/group based system and later graduate to something that might encompass file sharing and digital rights management.

Find: The function to print the results of Find . Let the "Tab" key cycle through each string & the "Enter" key to be used as the standard "Ok" or "Action" button (For other -Reaction- apps too).
[DONE] Find: The ability to execute/run programs from the Find results window.
Find: The ability to display directory paths (Not only files) & open their windows from the Find results window.

[DONE] Fonts: Sub-pixel font rendering (Cleartype), if not supported already.

[DONE] Format: Default name to be set to the current disk name instead of "Empty". If you give the disk a name that's already an Assign, have the ability to remove or rename the Assign via a requester.

Prefs/GUI: 'No change' to some items: With all these new themes, we need a way of NOT changing certain things. E.g. Opaque window moving/resizing. This is something I like always active but themes are changing it, others might like opaque stuff always off. Prefs/GUI should have an option for 'No change' ("Y"=On, "N"=Off, "-"=No change).
Prefs/GUI: Extra title bar option where the user may choose to have the full "address" of the drawer location in the window titlebar. E.g. A drawer named "ImageFX" could also be labelled "Work:Multimedia/ImageFX" (More details from Phantom here).

Icons
Transparency: Retain transparency while dragging across Overlay areas (eg. Over a DVPlayer video using Overlay).
Layout: Icon "panes"; The ability to set areas of the Workbench to show only certain types of icons. i.e. Set areas for Devices, App Icons, Removable Media, Iconified programs.
Layout: A grid system for the icons to be layed on would be nice as well as filename wrapping. So that as standard so that even files without icons would be in a grid rather than scattered.
[SORT OF DONE, depends on future updates & icon modules] Icon Displaying: Resizable (Interpolated) - Different settings for screen & window icons. [BUT NOT THIS ONE] Leave Out - Option to have left out icons also stay in their own drawer.
Icon Auto De-Select: Icons to unmark themselves after a double-click after a chosen time by the user (Or not if you don't want).
[DONE] Icon Drag & Drop to another screen: i.e. while holding the LMB on an icon, Amiga-M to the wanted program and release LMB or to drag the icon to the screen depth gadget, a pop up menu appears with a list of screens to go to (Switches after a user definable time). (Even better, we can drag a screen down & DnD something into the dragged screen).
[DONE] Icons: royleith was after keyboard shortcuts for the "Window/View by" options. (We also have shortcuts for "Clean up by" now).

Kill Tasks/Processes & System Info Tool: A program to kill tasks/processes. It was suggested that the GrimReaper could be extended to cover this. In addition there have been some requests for a proper "ShutDown" procedure. We don't need it but, from a safety aspect, why not have the choice.

Manual: A printed manual would be nice.

[DONE] Menus: Non blocking menus.

Multiview: The choice to select a screenmode before playing/viewing your picture/animation (Like CyberAmin for example).

NotePad: Remember Column position between long & short lines as EditPad did in AOS3.9.

PartitionWizard & MediaToolbox: PartitionWizard and Media Toolbox have full Salvage/Restore/Recovery/Repair support for SFS & when they load, start in "Beginner" mode as default (Tooltype: PROGRAM_MODE=NORMAL , Thanks Moly).

Pointer: Higher priority given to mouse so it acts more 'Amiga-like' under heavy load, the mouse doesn't stutter as other processes take CPU/priority.

[Sort of done] Prefs: Reusing some of the Prefs programs by merging some (eg. The 3 printer prefs). See more here (Post #154). Note, PrinterGFX is now simply a script for backward compatability & PrinterPS is exclusively for PostSctipt printers. Thanks TetiSoft.
Sound Prefs: Expanded to support system events "such as cd insert/eject, open/close window, open/close screen, GR, mouse button clicks, keyboard clicks, etc."

RAM/RAD Drives: Prefs for setting a number and size of RAM/RAD disks to be mounted at bootup.

[Part done, customisable but not alignable]Screen Title Bar: More functions, options & status display options (More detailed description here.

Screens: Put PUBLICSCREEN/SCREEN option to LoadWB command (Tomppeli explains).
[DONE] Screens: And that old chestnut, Draggable screens

[Part done, syncing but not at set intervals, manual only] Time: The ability for OS4 to syncronise its time to (NTP Server) another computer automatically (User specified interval as well as upon bootup).

USB: Autoconfig for USB devices! Actually, I'd settle for full USB 1.1-2.0 support (Is this in yet? FuZion)

WBPattern: Aligning to 'Centre' should always still be centred rather than aligned to the top left if the image is larger than the screen resolution. Also, when you use the "Scale" or "Scale well" layout, the size of the top bar is not used when resizing the background picture, so the last 20 or 40 lines of the picture are usually off screen.

Windows
Resize Gadget: Double Click for a "Resize to fit". Auto resize to fit being an option for drawers.
[DONE] Dragging: When dragging Press 'Right-Alt' for a non opaque drag (How about Semi Opaque too?).
Dragging: ... of windows onto another screen. eg. Dragging a calculator from the Workbench screen onto your Photogenics screen (Bad example I know ).
Realtime drop shadows: Screen title bar & windows. Differing shadow depths depending on windows depth; i.e. Having five windows open, each would have a further away shadow than the last. Also, casting 'closer' shadows to underlying windows would be nice (Go on, who needs a mock up screen shot because this is a terrible description?).
Iconify: Add an "Iconify" gadget to all windows (Inc. WB windows). Also an "Iconify all windows & apps" command & an "un-iconify all inconified windows & apps" (à la 'F11' under Mac OSX).
[DONE] Scrolling: Scroll working for ALL OS4 windows (I assume Wegster means mouse wheel scroll).
Zip Gadget: Should have a context sensitive image that shows whether the size is full or reduced & a 'Snapshot' could store both states as Workbench 1.3 did.
Snapshot All: Keyboard shortcut for this & a snapshot option that works on program windows, a la opened MUI windows.
Inactive Windows: Transparent appearance, like the option available on the pull down menus.

Misc: Royleith wants a chauffeur called 'Derek'.

2nd Party Apps:

AHI: Auto initialised instead of having to run mixer. On this note (No pun), our levels are all over the place, playing a DVD, playing MP3's, other sounds& I m always adjusting my volume.
AHI: Surround sound.

AmiDock
Hidden Devices: A 'Hidden Device' in AmiDock won't open it's window. This would be nice to have a 'Clean' Workbench with a Popup Dockie holding your hidden devices.
Removable Media (Plug-in?): When inserting removable media AmiDock could display & remove their icons in a Dock. This could pop up (Or slide on) to display the storage medium.
[DONE] Keyboard Hotkey: A "learn" function for the hotkeys in AmiDock, like the FKey commodity.
Transparent Background: Realtime transparent backgrounds like Menus have the option for (Course it's possible, by hook or by crook ).

Depth to Front: Upon RMB clicking a window, this could also display iconified apps & re-open them if selected.

MUI
MMB Scrolling: When double clicking the MMB & scrolling, the frame rate is slow as opposed to holding down the middle button or using the scroll bar. Could we also have settings for the sensitivity of a double MMB click?
Prefs: There doesn't seem to be any settings for the 'Second Bubble' any longer with regards to bubble help. This was handy.

RAWBInfo
[DONE] Filesizes: Displaying file sizes needs to be easier to read, in MB s or with Commas in larger sizes (Commas are used when displaying a directory size but not a single filesize).
Shortcuts: Right Amiga+D is set for both Delete & Default image. Maybe use Right Amiga+T for 'Default' since 'D' & 'F' are already used.

Trashcan: mpiva has a nice take on an advanced trashcan beyond BenchTrash here. (I cannot see Benchtrash in Update 4. Plans to replace it maybe?).

3nd Party Apps: (Some of these are more like ports so slightly off topic but still could be nice additions).

Ports (ish): AmigaAnywhere, A working CUPS server (or an equivalent that is 100% compatable with CUPS on a local network), TWAIN, Envoy Clone (I would also like to see the included ftp features used to provide mounted ftp volumes like D'Mag. Oh, and an 'Up one Drawer/Open Parent' gadget for windows as a standard option & gadgets for 'Show all files/icons only' & 'View by Name/Icon' toggling), Integrated FTP, integrated SMBFS, something similar to WINS (See here), Synergy2, System Browser, a new virtual homer

GUI: Dev Kit

NG Pointer: An excellent pointer thing if I do say so myself (We now have support for 32 Bit Pointers, buth they're still static).

PowerIcons: Integrated PowerIcons-like-System: Offering support for file types (Datatypes) as icons (i.e. As well as PNG's: GIF anims, Windows ICO's, IFF, JPG's and things like SVG's for perfect scalability).

SnoopDOS: Output to Serial

Tutorial: Amiga OS 1.3 like Tutorial.

UBoot
Keyboard: UBoot and/or USB fixed so USB keyboard still can do a reboot when system crashes (Right now, often a PS2 keyboard will allow reboot but USB doesn't).

Bugs (ish?)

[Not seen this bug for a while, are we rid of it?] Menus: Sometimes stick indefinitely (Descibed here.

NotePad: Curser movement: Alt & cursors move the cursor to the first letter of a word, yet Alt+Del & Backspace aligns the cursor with spaces, meaning that deleting whole words currently leaves you with a double space. Alt+Del/Backspace could just a well remove a space to keep the function uniform.
NotePad: Practical test; Load it up, click on 'New', click on 'Open to get a requester. The other NotePad now cannot do this until the first has closed the requester but it can continue to be edited. Maybe there because there's no easy way of knowing which requester is for which NotePad but loading NotePad twice overcomes this feature.
NotePad: If a line ends with a ">" e.g. < a href="http://amigaworld.net">. When you double click a word in NotePad to highlight the whole word, then drag your pointer to the end of this line, the ">" at the end of the line doesn't get highlighted (More here).

MUI
Text Boxes: These need to be entirely displayed in the window for the scroll bars to be functional.

[Maybe sorted? Not seen a Grim for a while] RAWBInfo: Dragging a replacement icon in sometimes Grims.

That's the thread summarised up to post #182

@FuZion
Auto-resize to fit being an option for drawers.

Option to add minimize/iconize to all windows - this can be done on app by app, but not for everything AFAIK.

Ditto on PowerIcons- but allowing glow type two (or more) images for PNG icons.

scroll working for ALL OS4 windows.

Ability to hit enter in a requester, or Find for example, default action is to hit the 'ok'/action button.

True transparency of AmiDock instead of the 'snapshot background at start' style.

A tabbed, scrolling, keyword expanding shell/console. KingCon native PPC with Tabs.

AmigaDos shell 'compatibility' mode to use Unix pathing. cd / is NOT 'back one level' on Unix, so I always need to think a momunte when I'm in a shell.

Ability to launch a file directly from the Find output.

Easily editable keymaps and 'special keys.' Convert menus to query for each special key (if it doesn't already, been a while since I wrote any ami UI code!), so new apps display the right key combo regardless, and work with the right (possibly remapped) key on different systems.

Options for scroll wheel and multi-button mice configuration (ie, scroll moves up/down N lines, a screen, or ?, macro assignment to mouse buttons).

A DataType management UI.

firewire and USB 2 supported combo card driver, and at least one GigEthernet card supported.

Full MUI, or extension of ReAction so MUI isn't needed on new apps.

Easy user customizeable context keys or middle mouse button menu.

Excellent! OS4 is virtually perfect. I'm the only person to think of any new things & there's nothing else that needs to be added!

its directory dude, directory, or drawer, not a folder

Infact the Workbench term is Drawer, the DOS term is directory... In windows land they get called folders

/end nitpick mode

Umm, not sure I didn't miss something here? I already said largefile support, which is file sizes > 2GB.

What does NTFS have to do with anything?

It was just a reference to a particular phrase Homer Simpson used in one of the Simpsons' episodes.

In fact, I believe the actual clip was used in the port of the "Homer" program on Aminet.

Thanks Steve

There's another suggestion. A live Homer on your workbench, getting confused. Interacting, not restricted to a window, drawn using Anti-Grain so he looks flawless & plenty of doughnuts for him. Hehe... A virtual Homer Pet that keeps himself busy when you don't.

Great stuff!

Yes it was, I remember hearing that quite often when I had "Homer" running on my WorkBench. Somebody should really port it to OS4. It could be our unofficial office assistant

NotePad - Should remember Column position as EditPad did so that moving up lines that are longer then shorter then longer will bring the cursor back to it's horizontal position.

Notepad - should iconify to a sensible position instead of "just right of the device icons".

Which brings me to another suggestion:
Icon "panes" - have the ability to set areas of the Workbench to show only certain types of icons. For instance, the left side of the WB can by Device icons only; the top will only show Iconified program icons, while the bottom will house Left-out icons. Also have the ability to align the icons within panes to the left, right, centre, or justified.

Ah yes, DOpus Magellan has this. Very handy. I used to set my app icons to the right of the screen & devices to the left side of the screen. Kept things nice & neat.

On that note too. A sort of grid system for the icons to be layed on would be nice. So that as standard (Not just when you clean up by name etc...) so that even files without icons would be in a grid rather than scattered.
