Hey everyone,

a while ago I asked AmigaWorld.net users about applications in development for AmigaOS 4.0. As this topic has been one of the busiest forum threads the last week or so, I figure there's quite an interest on what to expect of the highly anticipated release of OS 4.0. Here's what AmigaWorld.net users have come up with so far:

Applications with W3 homes:
Homer: Homer Simpson on Workbench reacting to user input
LANClip: Share clipboard contents over a local area network
Audio Evolution: Multitrack audio recorder
Candy Factory: Create graphics in a quick fashion
Pagestream: Desk Top Publishing suite
Digital Almanac: An astronomy program
Real 3D: 3D modelling and rendering package
IBrowse: HTML ("World Wide Web/Internet") browser
Hollywood: Multimedia authoring suite
fxPAINT: Image creation/processing/administration suite.
Sid4Amiga: Music decoder for Commodore 64 "Sid" songs
HD-Rec: MIDI/Audio sequencer
MAME: Arcade/Coinop hardware emulator
"Various Hyperion Games": Details not given.

Applications lacking W3 homes:
WarpSNES: Super Nintendo Entertainment System emulator
gbe: "Debugger" used for application development

Feel free to add entries to this list (application name, homepage and a short, objective description of what the program does). Note that this thread is only intended for information about OS 4.0 applications. Please refrain from posting off-topic matters to this thread.

Please do not confuse the new, already working GDB debug system ported to AmigaOS4 with GBE, GameBoyEmulator, done by one of the OS4 developers, they are different things

Edit: I suppose as if FXpaint is confirmed to be OS4 native, then the other programs from IOSPIRIT, as FXScan,VHIStudio will be aswell.
/Edit.

2nd. Edit:
IIRC the same developer of Homer is working aswell on at least two more native programs for OS4,an MSN/AIM messenger client, and a MUI IDE for OS4.
/2nd.Edit.

Hey, not bad not bad! Don't forget that we need the Star Wars 3D-games like Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy and Knights Of The Old Republic

To do that, the Quake 3 engine needs to be ported..

Otherwise, keep these excellent wishes comming!!!

Well I think I might scrap the MUI IDE and make the project into a stand alone Autodoc viewer, of which it is already quite powerful in that respect. I've got quite a few good ideas to implement in there, but if any developers have a "wish-list" for an autodoc viewer, I'm all ears.

Regarding the messenger client and Homer, they're temporarily on hold until I've got my Amiga back up and running. I recently suffered from the dreaded leaking battery syndrome on my A4000 and have had it apart the last week giving it a good clean, changing the battery, upgrading HDD, buying this, buying that. Hopefully I'll be returning to full-time coding this weekend coming.

Also, when I've got some spare time, I'm going to update my website :

Snakepit

with loads of details, and screenshots (legalities permitting) of all of my projects running on AmigaOS4.

Stay tuned.

@Petah:

You might want to change the link you've got for Homer, as that website is due to come down any day now

I might be wrong here, but dont we already have a few autodoc viewers on aminet already.. while the amiga development community are crying out for a good IDE, like the ones they're used to on Windows/Linux/QNX/whatever ..?

I hope we see some vaporware/silicon circus (or whatever they're calling themselves now) software recompiled for OS 4.0. Especially AmIRC. I know the 68k emulation will be fast, but the more 68k emulated programs running at once, the slower your system will be, no? Correct me if I'm wrong Rogue!

I know VoyagerNG is not known for its stability, but surely with the limited memory protection OS 4.0 offers, this will go a long way towards preventing VoyagerNG from taking down the entire system when it crashes. Alternatives are always good anyway. Maybe more competition will help encourage more development on either side? Hmm, I just hope some of the stuff we've been hearing about will come to fruition as well.. i.e. web stuff for OS 4.1, aweb with the KHTML engine (I think it was), Mozilla port, etc.

Oh I just thought of a few programs to add to the list.. how about YAM and AWeb? Both open source. SOMEONE will recompile them, surely. If not the official guys, then someone else?

-Edit- Jabberwocky sources are available for download too.. so again, someone will eventually recompile/port it. Jabberwocky probably isnt as widely known as YAM/AWeb, so go here for an explanation of what it is:

Hi Slash,
I've been using the AutoDocViewer Lite by Ronny Tenebekk. It's a wonderful program and I'd love to have something similar for OS4. But I'd prefer if it ran in a single window, and used the ReAction GUI. I can help out with ReAction if you want.

Regards,
Trixie

If anyone wants to build and IDE but doesn't know where to start they might want to check out:

AmIDE

Its designed to be easy to adapt to different compilers (Not easy enough for me to do though) and is now an Opensource project on soureforge.

You're wrong

No, really, the number of 68k programs running doesn't have any more influence than the number of PPC programs running...

It is, well kinda It will be available as a 68k version for as long as it is deemed possible/viable, but will also be ported to PPC for the native OS4 version.

If features of OS4 are used (or needed) to make improvements to either the application and/or the development of IBrowse, then maybe the 68k version will be dropped at a certain point, but that decision lies primarily with Stefan.

My first big project jIRC - a basic ReAction IRC client is being written with OS4 in mind.

I've also got a couple of other ideas in the planning stages now, but I won't say anything more until I've at least got jIRC released.

Hello !

I don't think AmigaOS 4 will resist to Voyager

Anyway, as far as I know, it's not really possible to implement
proper MP (eg: like on Linux) on AmigaOSs (including MorphOS's ABOX).

Bye

I wouldn't bother; the game plays like crap, imho. There are much better racing games out there.
