With the Quickfix news item quickly disappearing off the front page, and thus comments really slowing down, I thought that I'd create a thread to discuss the problems with it. To start off, here are some of my previous posts on the topic:

Quote:
Sad to report that this update is CAUSING problems :( on my Sam440 (original). Not only do my Workbench window (default white) backdrops now have the graphical corruption previously reported on the Sam440 Flex (except my corruption lines are red), but sometimes the screen is going a patterned greeny-grey colour (looks a bit like a copper effect turned 90 degrees) requiring a hard reset

On the plus side, Capehills Quake 3 port (ioQuake3) now runs using Warp3D, and the slow-walking bug seems to have disappeared. Speed is still not great, despite using reduced visual quality settings (I posted before which ones you affect speed & which do not), but nice that it at least runs now.

Would like to know if the Quake 2 port works with Warp3D.

@Ned Quote:
This morning I did a cold boot and then my problems began. When doing the cold boot, the system scans the bus, loads kickstart, then I get a black screen, and then a screen comes up which says "OS4 Kernel (Kickstart Version 53.8)" and there is an animation of a floppy disk being inserted into the machine. Workbench never loads.

I have a similar but different problem. At the point (I think) where Workbench loads, often the screen can go white or black or otherwise have a funny pattern, with a small square in the top left corner, and OS4 is unresponsive (even to Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga), requiring a hard reset. At that point it may start OK, or it may require another hard reset

V.annoying, as I never had this problem before the update. I suspect the new video driver is at fault, and intend to go back to the old one to see if that helps.

Quote:
The improved speed (subjective) on Sam440 may be due to OS4 no-longer defaulting to the debug kernel. I need to try DVD playback, to see if that is any faster (it was nearly fast enough already)...

@ChrisH

Am I right in saying that any problems are limited to the Sam version?

@Stephen_Robinson
No, other people have reported problems on AmigaOnes, but possibly different problems (not enough reports yet to see much of a pattern). Don't recall any Peg2 issues, but maybe not many users there yet.

Of course, I can only report issues I see on my Sam440.

@Stephen_Robinson

My problem is with a uA1c. I am currently investigating the suggestion that my problem is related to needing a new battery on the motherboard. No conclusions yet.

A new thread, so i comment myself:

Quote:
So, finally I installed the QuickFix - the system seems to be faster, indeed. And the greeeen in Q2 - nice!

I don't have the "red lines" bug here, but - sadly enough - I had that "copper effect"/vertical coloured lines three or four times now (ca. one hour uptime now...). The system totally freezes, no sound output and only a hard reset is possible. I could not find a trigger for this yet, it seemed randomly. Hmmm...I will play with the sam440ep for some days and maybe a system rollback will be done (the sam was rather stable and behaved nicely before the update ).

[EDIT]
Ha, this post was too early! Here they are - I'm the next victim of red lines in the windows (plus that mentioned "copper effect"). So, I'll try the tricks mentioned in this thread...

@chrish
It seems that we both see the same effects, but mine occur during operation, means: bootup is ok, the red lines or the "copper effect" (sometimes with that "square", needs hard reset) occur after a couple of minutes or even hours of uptime.

The Quickfix fixed the graphics corruption on screens & windows with 1GB Sam Flex but now there is graphics corruption in the OS4 splash screen if I boot from the preboot screen (The one that appears when you hold down the Help (Scroll Lock) key during a reboot).

@Xenic

My only beef I got with my system, is the simple fact that it doesnt seem to have change the gameplay of Quake 3, Heretic 2 (still ISI) and Shogo.

The lengths that we would go to.
Thats me in the corner, thats me in the spotlight .....

Why dont you just let the system reboot and find something else to do with your fingers
for the 3 or so second during reboot ?

I would if the system worked right. I'm constantly having to try different combinations of hardware and software changes to get things working; hence booting to a different partition to see if it helps the latest problem: I can't compile medium or large size sources on the SAM Flex. I noticed the graphics corruption while trying to fix my compile problem. Have you done any compiling on SAM Flex? After about 10 files compile "cc1" crashes with an ISI error.

@Gebrochen

The game play? How would it affect the gaame play? It's a system bugfix, not a game bugfix.

Do your gfx now look normal in Q3?

@Xenic

how about sending the board back to me for a free full check?

It could happen, in rare cases, that board or other components get damaged due shocks received during shipping or for other causes.

If there is something faulty, it will be replaced under warranty.

If I boot using the OS4.1 CD ,I get Lines coming down the OS4.1 splash screen.
Since I do not get these with the quickfix I conclude that the hardware is fine
but that there is an issue with the initial release, which has been corrected
in the latest quickfix, for most OS4.1 setups for the Sam Flex.

I do not program so I dont compile.

What I have kept trying to ask you is if you have any non SFS0 partitions on your system.
I have 4 partions on mine , all SFS0.
I am sure that your problem is not hardware related. The more you fiddle the more
chance you have of damaging the hardware.

I dont mind if you ask me about my configuration and installed applications so that you can compare my setup to yours, But you tend to ignore questions related to comparisons of setup.

Same here on my non-flex SAM (i.e. no problems).

@m3x

Note that Xenic seems to have problems with other non Sam machines as well.

quoting him from another thread

Quote:
After most of the above changes my SAM Flex is now about as stable as my µA1. Both systems suffer from system freezes on almost a daily basis. Since I have tested both with "clean" OS 4.1 installs, I have concluded that there are serious problems with some software included with OS4.1 or the basic OS4.1 system software itself. Throughout the transition through various OS4 prereleases on my µA1 I got occasional Grim Reapers but rarely system freezes. The daily system freezes didn't start until OS4Final or OS4.1. After I've tested my SAM for a month I plan on reinstalling OS4Final on my µA1 for further testing. These freezes must be fixed. They make the OS look really bad in my view. Here are my biggest freeze initiators on my SAM FLex:
Dragging the OWB scrollbar up and down on long pages.
Editing long forum responses (like this) with IBrowse. It froze the first time I attempted this post and I had to start over after rebooting.

No problems on peg2 with this update. Only pluses at moment:
1. mplayer works better
2. celestia works better
3. one warp3d bug which was on peg/radeons (not visibly one, programming one) - are gone.
