OK, my XE has been sleeping in storage for a few years now. We finally have moved outg of our storage room enough for me to get to it, set it up (mostly) and turn it on today. Gave it a freas coin battery, fiddled in uboot settings a little, and up came 4.1!

So, it's been 3 or 4 or 5 years. I no longer remember many config details.

How do I determing which point level of 4.1 I have to know where to start with OS updates?

How do I remember and redo additional eeprom settings, such as hard drive pio/udma things, some keyboard help key thing, etc?

I plugged in the amikit wifi card I ordered a while ago, and need to get that running.

I need to catch up with a lot of stuff, install timberwolf, find my pci/pcie adaptors, update sdk and play with uboot, etc.

What are recommended things today to make sure I get them installed?

After we're all moved and have a more spacious home, then I'll need to find the 1GB registered ram sticks from a year ago, my zalman heatsink to replace stock one, etc.

Fun! And let's hope I have time to keep up!

@billt

Welcome back!

If you check the Workbench Menus "About" it will tell you your current install revision.

The Hyperion website will provide updates as far as 4.1 Update 6

From there, AmiUpdate is now part of the OS, and it will get you everything that
has come out since 4.1.6.

[edit]wrong revision number.
[edit2] still trying!

@billt

Be sure you reboot after applying each update in order before you apply the next one.

My XE G4 sure had some quirks. I wish I could remember them all to relate to you, but after receiving my X1000 in late summer 2012 I haven't switched on my XE and all of my XE quirk memories have faded. One of these days I need to update it too since I think it is still on Update 5.

@lylehaze

I thought 4.1.6 was the version that added AmiUpdate for the OS updates?

@DWolfman

My other Amiga is not here at the moment.
Edit made, Thanks for the correction!

And please don't forget to give the DualUBootA1 PCB a try!

That's on the pile. I need to find another Flash chip and some wired switches, though those are all probably buried in offsite storage somewhere.

For now, I'll be happy to find a mouse. :) I did find a keyoard to use for the moment, and plugged in a borrowed cheapie USB mouse.

I see Kickstart 53.5 and Workbench 53.1. I've not yet found a table to map that to 4.1, 4.1u1, 4.1u2, etc. Any hints?

And the first thing I really had to do was fix my screenmode in P96mode. This is a 1680x1050 60Hz monitor, and it wasn't coming up right. Not sure what I had before or if it was just wrong last time I meddled with things, but at least I can see straight now. Fortunately I got to remember some VGA timing stuff in making a VGA controller for an FPGA/VHDL university course a year ago. Fun!

I've found some other PCI/PCI-e cards I wanted to tinker with at some point, including a PCI-e bridge and a desktop to mini adapter for a tasty Atheros wifi card to experiemnt with. I'm not sure how long I'll be able to play before selling the hosue and being homeless for a while, but hopefully I'll get to have some fun. :)

It seems that from here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AmigaOS_4

based on the 2008 copyright date then I must have the original 4.1 release, and no updates, so I should start with the quick fixes and then update 1 etc.

@billt

I'm not sure when the change was made, but my Workbench
"About" menu, as well as the WB titlebar, give a release
and update number. Convenient. :)

Welcome back!

OK Geri, things are runing OK with 4.1u6.

Care to show me where to learn how to trash it all trying to get Linux in there too?

My HD seems to be ni the neighborhood of 120GB, and for the most part I can shuffle things around to make some Linux partitions. I don' thave a second drive or room for an IDE/SATA card to add another drive, so hopefully things will fit in here somehow all on the same drive...

@billt

You should also be able to see it from the SLB menu. It's usually in the label from the Kicklayout.

BTW, Update 1 was a full install ISO, so if you have original OS4.1 then it's reinstall I'm afraid.

@Hypex

Yep, I learned that after dong the quickfixes to 4.1u0. 4.1u1 is a clean-slate reinstall CD. Anything after that updates over the previous install in-place.

I htink I've got OS4.1 in a good place at update 6 now. So for other reasons, now I need to learn how to Install Linux onthe same hard drive, and rearrange my partitions as needed to allow that alongside all my OS4.1 stuff.

Great! I am glad it went well for you.

I remember my original XE battery lasted for several years, then suddenly I got a whole bunch of strange errors. I had been turning off my XE by using the rear switch. Folks told me that was the wrong thing to do and I should be using the front switch to prolong the battery life. My original battery must have been a super battery then for lasting a several years. So following their advice, I replaced the battery and began using the front switch. Sure the XE started running fine without errors, but then I was plagued with errors every week or so and went through a series of new batteries as none of them lasted more than a week. I bought a whole package of those batteries and like clockwork replaced the battery at the first sign of errors. Finally I hit upon a battery which lasted.

Who is to say why my original battery lasted so long by using the rear switch and why new batteries kept going bad by using the front switch? I have no idea! At least after a couple of months the machine finally stopped eating batteries and began working correctly.

Sure!

Let's start with the download of Hypex' Debian Installer ISO, as linked (DebianInstaller.lha) in this post:
http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic_id=26623&forum=34&start=200&viewmode=flat&order=0#694414

The required standard Debian install CD is now available here:
debian-6.0.7-powerpc-CD-1.iso

That sounds good. I advice to setup a Linux boot partition directly after the OS4 system partition that can be recognized by the slb_v2. More information about this can be found in the AmigaOne_Linux_Bootloader_Specification.

The installation still requires some manual intervention (especially to make the system bootable and the upgrade to kernel 2.6.32). So let me know, when you have everything ready to start the installation.

@Geri

Any advice on Linux partition size, swap, etc? Or does that come later?

I had a look in Partition Wizard in 4.1. I used to be pretty good with HDToolbox, can't quite make sense of what to use for rearranging partitions once my data is safe elsewhere...

Ah, SYS:System/, not SYS:Utilities. MediaToolbox. Got it. :)

And I've made 2 CDs, one Debian 6.0.7 PPC CD1, an done BootTest from the DebianInstaller.lha archive.

Oh, and if it makes any difference, I do have the DMA fix, and I also added the audio codec chip. And it is an XE-G4, with 256MB RAM. I have a pile of 1GB registered stcks somewhere to try, but they must already have gone off to storage and I won't find them again for a while.

No, your right, because you need to setup the partitions with OS4's Media Toolbox up front!

I recommend at least 128MB for the boot partition (which should come right after the OS4 system partition) and a 6 to 8GB for the Linux root partition. It's always a good idea to create a separate partition for the /home directory and maybe a FFS DOS/3 partition for the data exchange with OS4.

The Linux swap partition should be at least two times the amount of RAM (that's the rule of thumb as far as I know), but if you think about putting in more RAM, then you can also make it bigger.

Good! The CD with the DebianInstaller.lha image should be bootable like a OS4 install CD (it comes with a second level bootloader).

The onboard audio codec should work. I don't know what to think of the DMA fix. I personally plan to revert it, to check for its impact on graphics hardware acceleration.
