| Hi,
Since almost all the X500 Plus cases have been delivered now, I thought we could do with a nice, little competition...
Please post photos of your modded, improved, customised X500 Plus cases here.
The community will comment on the photos. The person with the most positives comments wins.
Things that will be taken into account:
- Modifications, improvements, customisations performed - Hardware used and specs (SSD/HDD, memory, motherboard(s), graphics card etc...) - Operating System(s) - Looks, adhesives etc...
The prize: one of my standalone USB mechanical keyboards worth more than £150 complete of custom Amiga keys with the winner's language layout laser etched on.
Is it that it?
Nope...the person (not the X500 Plus owner) who best explains and gives reasons why the winner should...win...gets one too. (I will be the judge of this and I am not accepting bribes...ok I might consider it)
This competition/game will end on 30th April 2014. So you have plenty of time.
Have fun and Happy Christmas/Holidays.

Impressive photos Paul...and that motherboard looks delicious!
That looks like an X86 flex board...good choice.
Specs please...
Don't forget that it's a small enclosure so uber-powerful systems might get hot...play around with airflow, flip the fans (all airflow coming in or out or a mix of both) and my advice is about the cabling...once you've decided how to route them to the motherboard...group them and fix them neatly. I've made the ATX cut out slightly higher so you can adjust your I/O panel and the motherboard accordingly.
I'd also see a nice SSD in there with a picoPSU.
Looking good! Keep it up!

| I'm not expecting to win anything with this, but here is my X500 as it stands so far!
This is just 'phase 1', with more work planned as budget allows.
Youtube link at the very bottom!
Hardware: Intel mini ITX botherboard Atom CPU @ 1.6Ghz Single Channel DDR2 2GB RAM 3.5" SATA 7200RPM hard drive (will be replaced with a SSD) External PSU salvaged from an old PC (will also be replaced)
Software: Linux MINT 16 FS-UAE XMBC
Basically this machine serves as our media center, with some amiga emulation thrown in! So far I have tested Flashback, Space Crusade and Alien Breed with no issues.

| Soon I should be receiving the plastic, aluminium parts, fans, nuts, bolts, switches, LEDs etc... for the Evo and I need some space (and cash) so I've decided to put a couple of X500 Plus cases on ebay.
These are not prototypes but some of the very first in the batch of 25 we made so they are as complete as the others (instructions, slim Samsung DVD-RW with slim cable, internal USB card reader, silent fans, feet, 16X PCI-Express flexible riser card, key ring etc...) but they have been used...by me...
When I say used, I mean put together to take photos and videos, assembled systems inside for testing and fun, played with, taken to places etc...
If anyone is interested this is the link for the first one:
X500 Plus
It has Blue and Red LEDs. Please read the description. Postage for people outside the U.K. please contact me first.
A white one is on its way too.
These will also enter the competition.

Can I suggest you to change the title of your ebay auction in: "X500 Plus computer Amiga replica case for mini-itx or flex-atx boards" ?
The auction would have a lot more visibility |

Perhaps not the right thread but allow me the lazyness: I am not familiar with industrial design / production etc. - but what would it take to make the same exact case out of plastic rather than aluminum? Completely or just slightly different blueprint / process? |

If you want this case made of plastics, you'll need molds. At-least two of them. One for the upper half, one for the lower half. Those molds would most probably be made out of aluminium. This is a time consuming (thus expensive) process.
If you made a little mistake on the design of the case, a lot of money has to be put into modifying the molds.
Then, to keep radiation to a limit, some metal shielding should be provided (or the inner case could be painted with conductive paint) as well.
So choosing the design like the Daddy did seems to be the most rational as it can be made using 'standard' machinery using well known techniques.

Amiga_3k is right. The case is made out of aluminium and plastic. Originally I wanted to go all plastic and possibly use injection moulding but this is way too expensive.
The aluminium part is the base, this holds the components and the weight. The sides and top are plastic. Last edited by TheDaddy on 30-Dec-2013 at 09:19 AM.
