| @mbilla I MAY have to hug you. It sure LOOKS like an USB IBM Model M, WITH keyswitches, WITH 'special' keys. I'm ordering one NOW damnit! If it works better than this POS Matias pro (had to buy for the mac keys to replace many IBMs), I'm buying 4 more.

Looks like a nice keyboard - labels are for wimps Actually, I reconfigured my keyboard to DVORAK layout a while ago, never got round to learning the new layout and I'm now using it with the QWERTY keymap Though I cannot stand single-height return keys like that...
If you want something similar but with marked keys, "the customizer" here is apparently the same as the old IBM Model M. Last edited by alx on 15-Jun-2005 at 10:11 PM.

Crap, too late. I may have to order one of those too Actually, I've got plenty of IBMs, but had to 'give them up' for OS X and their 'extra keys' (not to mention on AOS). So, what I really want, and would pay dearly for, is:
IBM Model M 'clicky' keyboard micro-switch keys WITH USB With 'extra' keys.
I'd pay $100-$150 for this, and buy 4 of them if it was what I wanted.
I did call both Das Keyboard and pcKeyboard/UniComp.
Both were pretty good to deal with over the phone. I've got a Das keyboard coming- anyone know where to get some keycap labels? I don't want all labelled, but been typing long enough that I 'do it wrong, but fast' and occasionally need a reference point to get back into position.
PC Keyboard evidently owns the rights to the original IBM 'clickies'/Model Ms etc, and is supposed to have a USB, extra Key, Model M -alike (smaller diemsions, same internals) in August or September- I WILL buy one of them then as well, regardless of the cost on it.
If one of the two of these work out, I may have to have a bonfire to melt the Matias keyboard

Most (probably all) keyboards have a little bump on the "f" and "j" keys for touchtypers to orientate themselves by - not that that's any use to me at the moment though (my "f" is a "y" and my "j" is a "x" )_________________

| I refuse to spend more than $10 on a keyboard, IMO they're disposable and should be changed every few months or so, depending on eating and smoking habits. (Among OTHER things! ) Last edited by T_Bone on 15-Jun-2005 at 10:21 PM.

They're not disposable, or shouldn't be, IMO, when you sometimes are at one for 18 hours a day for your job. My Model Ms are TWENTY years old, and still work perfectly. I type MUCH faster on them than on this 'thing,' or any $10-$80 keyboard by FAR.
@alx- yeah, I know about the bumps, it's more mental than 'needed'- I KNOW I don't need to look at the keys, but part of me still thinks I do Plus the numeric keypad, or the numberic row, at least a reference for 1, 5, 0 would be good._________________ Are we not done with the same silly arguments and flames yet??! |

After too many years on IBM kit I miss the M keyboard.
Is it possible to purchase Unicomp keyboards in the UK, as if not I'll have to purchase direct?

Dunno about shipping- looks like they'll ship, but I didn't see anything about dealers. I bought a PS2 + extra keys from them ( was cheapish ), so will see just how close to the Model M's it really is, and compare it to the other one (see, if they just had the Model M, USB, extra keys, it really IS cheaper to just buy what you want...IF it existed). Gonna try the PS2-> USB adapter again and see if the Mac and A1 deal with it or not.. _________________ Are we not done with the same silly arguments and flames yet??! |

Don't want to burst your bubble too much but really you could easily make this keyboard.
1) Goto the store and buy rubbing compound such that you'd use to shine your car with. 2) Get whatever keyboard you want 3) Pop off the keys you want 'erased' 4) Rub key with rubbing compound to 'erase' the type 5) Reattach key

Grin, not exactly the same. Their theory is interesting- different weight keys for different areas. Primarily interested in ANY USB k/b that doesn't suck, but if PCKeyboards comes out with the model M/USB + extra keys version they SAY will be available, I expect to buy a half dozen of them once I confirm it's not a rip-off/clone like the Matias Pro.

| I miss the Model M keyboards.
I find that the Dell PS/2 keyboards are almost as good. Mine has survived my CS:S sessions... _________________ - Ronald

Let us know how the keyboard works out when you get it -- I'm in the market for a new one myself. |

You should try some paper plates for your eating . . . they're cleaper than keyboards, and more hygenic. _________________ -vortexau, who's A1 XE-G4 remains at half-RAM ! A2000HD (from 1991) 060 64Mb PicassoII with OS3.5 . . . still working. |

| @cell Just an update. The 'das keyboard' is on order, but is likely still several weeks away. I got so annoyed with my Mattia Tactile Pro I 'gave in' and bought an 'updated' Model M from PCKeyboards.com- it's PS/2, now fed via a PS2->USB converter into my USB KVM, but has the additional 'special' keys.
It's heavy, not as heavy as the original Model Ms, and is built slightly differently- there's a 'seam' along the bottom front and sides.
I can't confirm it uses the same switches as the Model Ms did, but they feel _close_ if not the same. Going to grab a Model M from the other room in a few to compare- key action is nearly identical, along with the 'click' from immediate feeling though ( I just plugged it in 5 mins ago).
Their 'updated Model M' with special Windows/Linux/Amiga/Mac keys plus native USB is supposed to be out in a few months. If it comes out, at least at this point, I'll likely be getting several of them if this one holds up until then.
Thumbs up for initial reaction, although may not not as well built as the 'tank' (but seems better than others, from the top it appears beefy enough).
