These are quite interesting news... If only they took this decision some years ago... _________________ God created Paula so that Allister Brimble and Dave Whittaker could do music

If they made low end Power7 versions just like they did with 970FX it would be the most interesting PPC news in 10 years (if they decided to use Opteron motherboards, of course).
Dropping ElasticBus in favour of HyperTransport would give them a lot of sales. It would only require rewritting the BIOS. It would be ultra-interesting and this could mean the end of amiga-custom-ultra-expensive-motherboards-with-the-power-of-a-pocket-calculator.
It would be quite interesting for high-end cpus but also for cheaper ones. This could cause a big change for us amigans. Even if the cpu costed us 500¤ at least you would get a decent or at least "normal" performance/price ratio machine. Last edited by Crumb on 26-Sep-2006 at 07:56 AM. If only PMC Sierra supported Socket 754/939 If only PPC chips supported Socket A |

interesting indeed. im very doubtful at theregisters hope for power7 to be out already in 2009. power6 wont be out for atleast another half a year, and its doubtful at best that ibm releases a new generation within 2 years.

some years ago amd's sockets wasnt a viable alternative.
stuffing the upcomming power6 into opteron sockets would be even more interesting.

defintly. with current powerpc cpus being based on power4 though power5 isnt exactly a new cpu, and power6 not looking like a strong base for a new powerpc generation, power7 might be exactly that.

The 2008/2009 time period also coincides with Intel’s common socket (CSI) platform for Itanium and Xeon._________________ Amiga 1200 (rev 1D1, KS 3.2, PiStorm32/RPi CM4/Emu68) Amiga 500 (rev 6A, ECS, KS 3.2, PiStorm/RPi 4B/Emu68) Ryzen 9 7900X, DDR5-6000 64 GB RAM, GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB |

Very interesting indeed! I wonder if they bring back the virtual little endian mode in order to simplify the BIOS programming. |

This is most likely for Power7 "lite", not the full size enterprise version. It's basically a way of cutting costs right down for low end machines. If they'd used HT on the 970 they would have been a lot cheaper as well.

A Power6 lite yes, but it looks like that isn't possible because it means a lot of redesign work. Existing Opteron sockets have nowhere near enough bandwidth for a full power6.

Huh? Power6 looks like it's going to be an absolute monster._________________ Whyzzat? |

Cool. Too bad it's a few years away. I'd love to see a PowerPC model that fits a mobitl x86 socket for use in laptops...

Depends on the target HTT release i.e. V2.0, V3.0 (2007), V4.0 (2008). Future Socket F HTT3.0 supports 5 HTT links.Last edited by Hammer on 26-Sep-2006 at 08:28 PM.

AMD and IBM (and SUN) needs to answer Intel’s joint Itanium and Xeon infrastructure solution i.e. 1. AMD doesn’t have a big-tin non-X86/X64 solution i.e. AMD’s MIPS (via ATI) line targets embedded use. 2. IBM doesn’t have access to commoditized PC motherboard solution i.e. AMD has deep links with Taiwanese ODM partners.
