Does anyone have any real life experience from solid state drives, like:

I know nothing about this but got interested. What's the pros/cons except the obvious, like low power, low noise, low heat, shake resistance etc? What's the price range of a 32GB 2.5" SSD compared to a 40GB 2.5" HDD?

WoW Great test under windows vista i can only image how fast could it be on a SamEP440 with AMIGA OS 4.0... Amazing !

Since I'm using an Amiga web browser, I can't see that video thing, but my experience for solid state harddrive in amiga classic is that they are no faster than mechanical one, but are of course silent and probably consume less power.

But I dunno how that releates to more powerful computers with these drives...

I wrote an article for Information Week about this; it should come out October 22.

In short: all the advantages except price are there. The last item may fall into place once the Canadian and US governments get done raking Samsung, Sandisk and quite a few other manufacturers over the coals for collusion and price fixing.

Apple's been rumored to have solid state drives in laptops by year end meaning smaller lighter laptops that are very thin.. This rocks.. No more drop and loose your information.

If my 16 gig ipod touch is any indication, this will be a much better solution for all of us. Now just wait for prices to go down on denser models.

Cooler, more silent, less energy consumption, and more shake resistant than traditional HDD's. Seems *perfect* for mobile applications, such as laptops or sub-laptop computers. Better performance is another plus.

All SSD drives follow standard interfaces: SCSI flavors, SATA flavors and PATA flavors.

Just a big ol' chunk o' RAM hooked up to the appropriate interface.

Thanks for that link. They talk about system boot speed in the comparison chart SSD vs HDD. G-darnit I was asking about that not long ago and was told that you cannot boot from SSDs. By Microsoft. Maybe there was room for misunderstanding to a degree as I was also asking about ExpressCard format SSDs, and maybe you cannot boot from those, I dunno.

I was also looking for info about using a flash card such as SD or MemoryStick in place of an SSD, as it seems you can get an ExpressCard flash reader and an SDHC memory card for cheaper than a purpose-built Expresscard fromat SSD of the same capacity. Thems is expensive!

My first thought into all this SSD stuff was because I found a Toshiba laptop on my shopping list has an optional secondary hard drive. I wanted to put the Windows OS on a flash SSD in the primary bay and have the most frequently used apps on it as well, and only go to the secondary bay hard drive for less common or large apps/games and data storage. Ideally anything on the SDD would be read-only other than when applying updates because I hear that writing to them is pretty slow. And while they've improved things, writing still reduces flash life so you certainly wouldn't want to be updating stuff all the time. Ignoring the slow speed, using flash for swap would kill it...

As an alternative to purpose-built SDD units, look into flash adaptors as well. There's adaptors to fit comact-flash for direct-replacement of 2.5inch laptop hard drives which seem cheaper than comparable SDD 2.5inch laptop size flash drives, for both IDE and SATA interfaces. Some take two compactflash cards. I'll likely find myself looking for one of those for the Efika I ordered instead of a hard drive.

Price for the 2.5" HDD SATA->CompactFlash adaptor is US$32.
cheapest 16GB CompactFlash on Newegg is US$105 without DMA, or $120 with DMA.
Total without DMA = $137, with DMA = $152

16GB SDD in 2.5" SATA laptop drive form factor is US$478 on Newegg. A slight financial difference...

16GB SDD in 2.5" IDE laptop drive is US$295 at Newegg

The biggest advantage to SDD is that you can get them in larger capacities than CompactFlash. Newegg lists them up to 128GB capacities, even in 2.5" HDD form factor. But at US$3779, I'm not sure how useful that is to the likes of us. It was a neat idea while it lasted, but I'm not freakin rich!

I'm also curious to check into why Efika cannot run two IDE devices and if possible build one of these CompactFlash adaptors witha buffered IDE port for CD drive. But as I don't remember for sure what was talked about on that before I'm not sure it's doable, but something I'd like to read up on again.

I tried a card said to be capable of 20MB/s in my AmigaOne. Although I didn't measure disk speed I found that there was no noticble performance between the flash card and the usual Seagate Baracuda.

Lexar do a 45MB/s UDMA capable card, which I assume will offer significantly better performance than the Baracuda. When I get one I'll let you know, though I'll be waiting until they hit £20 mark before I buy one.

We have some new ones here in laptops.
The bad things we've seen is that they are more expensive,
and perform slower than our standard IDE disk based drives.
