We're in the process of removing the remaining bugs. There isn't really much more to say. The features have more or less all been implemented. A few minor things are added still, but nothing spectacular.
This process is quite boring, and I'm afraid that it doesn't make good "progress reports", but it is mandatory. _________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail |

Whoa! I wasnt expecting that answer!
Does that include Warp3D, JIT, SNAP, WarpOS emulation, resource tracking, automatic stack enlarging, the new memory system, DMA drivers for optical drives, and USB joypad support??

Actually, it is not such a bad thing. Especially, if it was set against the spec that has been published (although no longer available on the Amiga Inc website?). This would be an indication of the goals achieved.
The one thing is to NOT ask for a percentage done. A quoted 98% (for arguements sake) done, would be a useless indicator as the final 2% could be the trickiest to finish (hence why it's still outstanding ;~)
Since it's currently 'ask 20 questions' season, as and when Hyperion sit in the big chair, here's the first question:
Of the published goals and objectives planned for OS4, what are still 'planned' and what have actually been implemented?
An obvious candidate is the grahics card support. I don't recall any recent mention of the work on th SNAP driver integration.
Ben mentioned HERE back in Feb 2003 there was only 8 items that remained to be done. How close are we now?

edit: Blx! Spent so long trying to remember the graphics card thingy (SNAP), questions asked by others! Last edited by jd997uk on 02-Apr-2005 at 07:47 AM.

It has already been said that the CSPPC/BPPC version is at the same level than the A1 version._________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

That only aplies to what is the same for both versions. Classic version will have diffrent drivers / boot loader etc. Maybe that was what cell was asking for.
If not. Then i am |

Oh, but it's not the biggest part. I mean: OS4 is already used on Classic by many betatesters so ... well ... it is as the same level than the A1 version _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

You may think it boring, but for many of us out here waiting, it's the best news heard in a while.
You know what I'm most looking forward to? Sure there's a long list of "must have" apps and stuff, but I'm most looking forward to the new input.device. Because of my KVM I am committed to PS2 mouse, and I've been spinning the wheel right off of it trying to get some scrolling action! I gotta say this new Logitech MX1000 is a sweet mouse, and it's got more buttons and stuff than I can count.
I look forward to using it more completely.

Yeah Rogue,
That ain't borin news. That's great news! I know bug hunting isn't the most interesting part (For most people at least) but it certainly marks a big step.
Does the phrase 'you guys rock' seem apt here? Yeah? Great.
YOU GUYS ROCK!

Well sort of. But without a stable driver for lets say the internal IDE port on a classic it won't be of much use. The same goes for the SCSI on the ppc cards.
The A1 version is very stable at the moment. It has a good installer, drivers that are native and so on. The classic still has some way to go to be on par with that.
This is just my understanding of the current status of OS4 for classics from reports and posting by OS4 developers.
After the dessision to go A1 version before classic release was made i think development on classic version has slowed down a bit. And this is offcource natural and in no way bad.
Hmm just to conclude this rant I still think the question of "what the status of the classic version is" is still valid. And should not be responded with just "it is the same level as the A1 version".

Ok, so give a list and I'll say "done" or "todo" (if I can).
Installer: AFAIK, the binary is the same as the A1 version. Now if you ask "will it be used to install OS4", I don't know. It depends if you can use the OS3.9 installer with the install script.

The kernel is always updated on both, and most of the rest is generic. The only thing where the blizzard/cyberstorm is behind is drivers, but otherwise, they're the same._________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail |

Warp3D is as good as finihshed, but it isn't really part of the OS (rather a contribution).
JIT is working since quite some time already.
SNAP porting is completed, but not yet integrated into the system.
WarpOS, well, I can play Wipeout XL
Resource tracking has been in AmigaOS for a long time as well. It's disabled by default because some old programs still expect e.g. memory to be around after exit.
Stack Enlargement and the new memory system are still being worked on, but theoretically we could release the OS without them.
DVD's and CD-ROM's can UDMA as well since some time already.
USB joypad support is still being worked on, but there same applies like the memory system - it isn't essential. I am quite confident, though, that it will be in the final release.
