Unauthorised copies of PicShow and Thumb on os4depot

I just recognised that someone uploaded the latest beta versions of PicShow and Thumb to os4depot.net. Now I understand where the news item about a tree months old Thumb version comes from.

I am really disappointed that this person didn't even think of asking me for permission. He/She didn't even change the "uploader" field, so everybody thinks I uploaded the programs.

The versions I publish on my homepage are beta versions. They are in no way complete, they are undocumented and might be rather unstable. They are not meant to be distributed.

If I feel that one of my programs is ready to be published, I am well able myself to upload it to os4depot and Aminet.

I would appreciate if this person would answer here and justify his/her intention.

Bye,
Thomas

@ikir

Yeah, the "Thumb" is Submitted by one "James Carrol"

Thumb! on OS4Depot

Get in touch with the maintainer of OS4Depot to remove the files if you feel
uncomfortable with them being there

@thomas

please contact orgin and get him to remove the archives if its of any problem.

i myself think its cool to have em there and i havent noticed problems with them but you have a valid point.

pst: same guy who uploaded made the news item, its kinda normal approach.

@thomas

I totally agree that the rights of the author should be respected in any possible way. IMHO it shouldn't be possible to upload archives to OS4Depot.net if you aren't the author.

Even I think it wasn't in a bad attention.

Already did it.

Yes, I totally agree. But he should have asked !

I admit that I usually need a rather long time to decide that a program is finished. Partly because I always find a new usefull feature to add just when I think I am finished and partly because of lazyness (need to write documentation, check if all translations are current etc.)

OS4Depot has a "passphrase" feature for that, so the maintainers can distinguish if the previous uploader wants to replace his archive. But I never used it because I am just not used to problems like this. Didn't happen on Aminet for years.

Bye,
Thomas

@thomas

the main problem theese days is that "some" people uploads their stuff to aminet but not os4depot and others who just keep em at their site (even complete things) , for people who doesnt read news items nor browse around the web all the time miss out on alot of stuff if theyre unlucky.

and as we have seen so many times before, people's sites die or changes address and so on and in most cases the files get lost

anyway i hope you can solve this and when you're ready publish the files through the proper channels.

cheers and good luck (thanx for 2 powerfull tools i use daily).

@thomas

Sorry to hear about this violation. I must say though, I spent last night playing with it and it is great. I have used Cybershow for eons and of course PhotoAlbum. I put it away for good. I then proceeded to clean up my picture files. It was so fast at finding duplicates. I even found one for a new avatar my old flakey one was getting a little tired.
Thanks again for a great program. I hope the repect you are receiving here makes up for the less than respectful (I assume) mistake.

Best,
John Paul

That's not very nice. Come on people. Fill in the "Uploader" field correctly. I know I would not like it if someone signed my name to something either.

Keep up the great work! Your software is very useful to me as well.

@Thomas

I'm VERY sorry! I didnt think of asking. I didnt realise authors would object to this..

I thought you hadnt had the time to do it yourself, and I wanted OS4 users to see your program, as os4depot.net is quite popular. Those are the only two reasons I did it..

Please accept my apologies. I think this is the stupidest thing I've done all year. :/

If its any consolation, I really like your software. :/

-Edit- oh btw, I thought I put my name in the uploader fields, but thinking back I think I remember just updating picshow and not changing any fields as they were all filled out... doh.

All together now: "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions"
If an author hasn't uploaded his/her stuff to PD sites, there is probably a good reason for it. No-one can take the decision to distribution software in his/her place.

People, always ask first. It's worse than rude not to, even though you do mean well.

@jahc

Mistakes were made, there was some uploading, a few explosions... That's all I know

Good-o for what you've said jahc. It's hard to come forward when intentions were only good.

@FuZion
I'll second that.

Good on you @jjahc.

I've made so many mistakes its embarrassing, so long as people make good an repair the damage -- no harm done in my book.

All the best,
Greg

PS I hope @thomas this satisifies you, enthusiasism for your product is the best excuse I can think of, being an absolute compliment.
