Hiya (back after about 4 months with no net connection)

I noticed on Amiga.org some people talking about the Amiga team on distributed net's OGR challenge dropping a place.

whiteb posted

Can I just add...
Those running PC platforms... upgrade to the latest "PRE" release. These are quite streamlined compared to the Stable, and on my P4-2.53.. i have gained around 10 Million nodes a second increase of processing.
This could be a reason we have dropped..

Technoid followed up with

Roughly 16-17% gain on a 2.3Ghz Barton core. Has anyone posted thisinfo on amigaworld.net? I know there are a few crunchers over there aswell.

So I thought I would post over here to encourage people to try the new client version. I can confirm its doubled my speed from around 10 Mnodes/sec to 20 Mn/s which is pretty impressive. Not to mention that I was only on about 4 Mn/s on my old computer

@firbodi

There already is an OS4 version. Go to
Distributed Amiga and click 'Download' to find it.

Hi pteppic,

This is only for the OGR part?

Is the RC5-72 improved too?

Well, I'll DL and find out.

On my P4 2.26 GHz I get from 3.1 million to mostly ~2.9 mil. a second on RC5 72.
(Win xppoo (oh, I mean pro, sorry for the confusion). I probably have like 20 spybots running, though)

Since the Amiga team slipped down a place I've been working all of my systems extra hard. That's interesting to know about the pre-release version. I've now updated the clients on my Windows systems.

Let's see if we can make it back up to 3rd place!

It's just a pity the stats pages are currently offline.

Kind regards,

Francis.

It is my understanding that the team is wanting everyone to concentrate on OGR-25.
I wonder how my Quad 200Mhz PentiumPro server would do? :) It need do something with
it, it is justing wasting space in my basement.

Hi there,

I already have dnet client v2.9010-495 for OS4. I hoped that the latest version (v2.9012-496) becomes avialable soon. May be it gives us some speed boost, or not!

@firbodi

I downloaded it and installed it just on one machine yet (out of 2)... Now I'm waiting for the Stats page to come back online to see if it made any changes before upgrading the second machine as well...

Well the new client certainly gave me a hell of a speed boost on one of my Windows sytems of about 2 to 2.5 times. Sweet!

On my other systems there was only a marginal improvement of about 5-10%.

Kind regards,

Francis.

So, a "team amiga" using x86 cores?

@Jerryuk007

You can get an indication of how fast the client is crunching the numbers by iconifying it to the system tray and then placing the mouse pointer over it. You should get a pop-up window stating the number of nodes/s it's doing.

Kind regards,

Francis.

Yeah, I was thinking that too! The irony isn't lost on me.

Still, I've also an u-A1 and an A1200 with a 68060 @ 66Mhz doing the numbers as well. There's also an x64 core system in my setup too.

Now if I could only get a client for my Dell Axim X51v I would have that crunching some numbers too!

Kind regards,

Francis.

@pteppic

I've produced about 22Mnodes on my A1 G4/933MHz for a long time now... x86, what??

It's a good thing this thread came up. I just found out my clients on my two work PCs were SERIOUSLY outdated! They were on build 490!!

And on top of that, I found out that they have been doing random RC5-72 blocks for months as the proxy setup had changed here at work (I was pointed at the wrong machine).

Something that I think the clients could really use: The ability to use an automatic proxy config script (the "proxy pac" file that IE and Firefox can use) to set up a proxy. If it had, I could have pointed it at the same thing as my web browsers have been for three years and never had to mess with it when they want to change things.

Anyway, the machines are uploading the blocks now (over 5000 on one of them, 10000 on the other) and will go back to OGR-25 once that is done.

Major speed boost for my P-4 box. Will have to wait and see what the other one does (it's an Athlon 64, but only running 32-bit windows), once it is done uploading..

The speed boosts come from the assembly optimised x86 cores. The PowerPC cores have not changed since the release versions already available. Nor has there been much development on the client in general, hence why no updated builds have been released for AmigaOS. If distributed.net call for new builds on all platforms, or the PowerPC cores are improved in the meantime, new AmigaOS versions will be released at that point.

I found that there was very little, if at all, improvement on my Athlon 64 running Windows XP x64 edition (evaluation version). I guess the core used for this processor hasn't been optimised further yet. What I really want is a 64-bit native version of the client!

Kind regards,

Francis
