| I work in the Intellectual Property industry and thought I might do a bit of a search into Amiga Inc's trademarks.
Looks like they've filed trademark applications around the world for Amiga, Amiga Anywhere, Amiga Enabled etc in mid to late 2006.
Thought people might be interested that they at least had the money to engage trademark attorney's around the world to file these for them and they are at least protecting their IP. |

Is it really that expensive to register Trademarks though? At least in the USA, with the right paper work and a relatively small about of cash you can register a trademark. (Defending it is another story). It probably isn't greatly different in other counties who honor the same copyright/trademark treaties as the US.

I guess that all depends on how many and which ones. It certainly IS very interesting though. It may be nothing other than an effort to protect their names by trademarking them at long last, possibly stemming from some of the recent legal spats. Or then again, it could be an indication that there has been some progress on the development front and that some things are indeed on their way "soonish" - whether on AOS4, AOS5, and/or AmigaAnywhere fronts is anyone's guess of course. What's very interesting is the AmigaAnywhere trademark, which implies that is hardly dead if they have decidedly moved to protect the name from potential poachers.

In documents prior to that time, AmigaAnywhere and the other terms were indicated as trademarks already. But maybe no paperwork had been done and somebody finally thought about doing it. I wouldn't read anything into this. Amiga and the VCs want to protect the IP, but I doubt if doing the paperwork signifies some new activity or anything -- just a hunch .

"technically" its not actually necessary to register a trademark in order for it to be yours and enforceable, if you use it long enough and prominently enough - you can gain a reputation as it being yours and enforce that reputation in the courts.
Of course, you have to have a registered trademark in order to use the ® symbol, it is also easier to enforce a registered trademark.
Given the "extensive" use of Amiga Anywhere they're much better off relying on a registered mark than enforcing the reputation they've earnt through extensive use. |

I didn't really bother checking any countries other than US, EU (the Czech and Finland apps would be covered by this) and AU - but it makes sense. Amiga might have even filed a Madrid Protocol application (like a worldwide application). |
