That's an important one to keep in mind.
If you go and buy a TV for $999 including delivery, and due to some distraction write a cheque for $990 instead, the shop can of cause say "sorry, sir, you must have been confused; The price of the TV is $999" and refuse to give you the TV. Or they can accept you cheque, give you a receipt for $999, and deliver the TV, and that's the end of it.
What the shop cannot do is accept your cheque, give you a receipt for $999, then stall on the TV delivery for 4 years, then (4 years after having cashed your cheque) say "Sorry, sir, the price of the TV was $999, you only wrote a cheque for $990, even though we accidentally receipted you $999. So you were $9 short, which means we don't have to deliver the TV, ever. Have a nice life, sir."
