@all

Has anyone got Rebol working under OS4 update2? When I try it I get a GrimReaper and it stops right there.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Yes, as I said, it doesn't do anything after that.

@Valiant

Seems to work here. Rebol/View 1.2.1.1.1
Rebol Desktop and also running scripts from cli
eg rebol script.r

For most of my 68K programs I have just copied the whole directory from a working Amithlon system to my Sam via Samba .
Most work except for a callerid program that I cant live without and STfax.

@Valiant

You might try running Snoopy and looking at the log just before the GR appears (in the log). You might find that Rebol is trying to open a library you don't have in your new system.

Here too Rebol/View 1.2.1.1 works just fine.

@Spectre660

What's wrong with your CID program? I take it you have a working modem on the serial port?

@AlexC

The program is GS CallerID from Aminet.
casuses a Guru Mditation : 80000003 on startup. Exits after ignoring the DSI errors . Have not currently got the modem connected as the program has a BlackBook only mode that should load it without the modem.Will have to retry again with the modem .
This may be the one thing the keeps me from replacing my Amithlon system with another OS4.x system .

@Spectre660

Okay, the log from "System information:" isn't needed, it's mainly the stack trace, registers and the disassembly which can tell something useful.

From what I understand the problem is a null pointer, but I'm not sure where nor why. It seems to be calling a dos function and feeding the unexpected result back to exec which doesn't say much and won't help at all :/

It happens right after it read the keyfile and config from S: but I'm not sure what it does next and would have to try it in UAE to find out.

[edit]
Without the source code I doubt it can be fixed but in the alternative you could try TeleBase2.6, perhaps its ARexx capabilities would do for what you're trying to achieve, otherwise there's always NComm which is a bit harder to setup but can do anything you want with its extensive scripting language (which is almost on topic though Rebol rules when it comes to scripting languages).

Heh. ok. That's weird.
I started talking about "enabling" in one thread, Carl's thread about enabling/etc. gets bumped, and now today...your link. hmm...

I've always wondered why there was so little interest in Rebol among Amigans. I mean, Carl is a legend around here and Amiga users like to swear by their heritage so one would expect much more buzz. It also strikes me that none of the OS maintainers, be it Haage&Partner or Hyperion, has ever considered the idea of integrating Rebol in AmigaOS (as ARexx replacement). Probably not needed now that we have Python but it's surprising that Rebol has always been out of the equation.

@Trixie

Yes! I highly agree. REBOL is very inspired by AmigaOS in being nimble and how it does its work through simplicity. I have no shortage of stories of people not believing what REBOL can do and how it works so fast. It's truly cases of "Only REBOL makes it possible." and it would be a strong point for making AmigaOS even more unique.

I think it's much the case the people find it too strange and it takes a bit of time to "get it". Also the lack of popularity hurts, but hopefully REBOL 3 will change that a bit.

@HMK

Thanks for the link! I hope Carl will manage to pull it off and come to AmiWest to present Rebol again to everyone as it's really a great language.

It would rock if it came pre-installed with the OS. Far better than Python and ARexx IMHO.

Since ages I have the last, free 68k versions on my OS3.9 and 4.1 machines - but, as always, it's the game "I'll look deeper into it, when I have some spare time..."
